| A traditional nail puller has two sharp jaws that can be used to strike wood to get to nails that are difficult to remove. The sponges penetrate the wood and grip the nail head around the nail shaft. | |
| The base heel on the jaws then works as a lever to close the jaws around the nail. The more force is applied to the pivot point, the tighter it must grip the nail. |
 | The nail puller is pressed against the pivot point and the nail is pulled out by the gripping jaws. Once the tension at the pivot point is released, the jaws will open again and release the nail. |
