How to Make a Hole in Resin Without a Drill (4 Methods)

If you want to make a hole in the resin without a drill, you can use the methods that I will post below.

Here are five methods you can try depending on your task. Apply one of the first three before pouring the resin into the mold, or one of the last two if you have already inserted the resin before it hardens or is cast.

You can make a hole in the resin using one of the following five methods:

  • Method 1: Using eye screws and a chisel knife
  • Method 2: Using a toothpick or straw
  • Method 3: Using metal wire
  • Method 4: Using a Wax Tube
  • Method 5: using a piece of wire

I'll go into more detail below.

Before resin curing

These methods are applicable if you have not already inserted and cured the resin.

Method 1: Using eye screws and a chisel knife

This method will require a chisel knife and eye screws.

  • Step 1: Mark points for inserting the eyelet using a chisel or other pointed tool. (see image 1A)
  • Step 2: Insert the mortising knife into the open mould. (see image 1B)
  • Step 3: Push the eye screw through the back of the mold using tweezers or pliers. (see image 1C)
  • Step 4: Insert the eye screw into the hole you made in the mold as far as needed. Make sure it's straight. (see image 1D)
  • Step 5: Once the eye screw is inserted into the hole in the mold, fill the mold with resin. (see image 1E)

When the resin hardens, the eye screw will be embedded inside the resin. (see image 1F)

Method 2: Using a toothpick or straw

This method will require a toothpick or straw.

2A

2B

  • Step 1: Pass the eye screw through a square toothpick or drinking straw as shown. This is to hold the screw over the mold hole. Make sure the threaded part of the eye screw is pointing straight down. (see picture 2A)
  • Step 2: Fill the mold with resin.

Once the resin has hardened, the eye screw will go in firmly. (see image 2B)

Method 3: Using metal wire

This method requires a small piece of silicone- or Teflon-coated metal wire.

3A

3B

3C

3D

  • Step 1: Pass a piece of silicone or teflon coated metal wire through the mold. (see image 3A) (1)
  • Step 2: Fill the mold with resin. (see image 3B)
  • Step 3: Remove the wire and resin from the mold after hardening.
  • Step 4: Squeeze hardened resin out of the mold. (see image 3C)
  • Step 5: You can now pass the wire through the cured resin. (see 3D image)

When the resin is almost hardened

These methods are applied when the resin is almost cured, i.e. before it is completely cast. The resin should not be too hard. Otherwise, the application of these methods may be difficult.

Method 4: Using a Wax Tube

This method requires the use of a wax tube:

  • Step 1: Take a wax tube and thread it of the appropriate length through the places where you want to make holes.
  • Step 2: Tubes can be inserted without resin sticking to wax. If there is excess wax around the hole, you can use a tool (screwdriver, drill, toothpick, etc.) to remove it.
  • Step 3: Remove the tube once the resin has hardened.

Method 5: Using a piece of wire

This method requires the use of a small piece of wire:

  • Step 1: Find a piece of metal wire with a gauge according to the size of the hole you want to create.
  • Step 2: Heat the wire a little so that it can easily pass through the resin. (2)
  • Step 3: Insert the wire through the resin.
  • Step 4: Remove wire after pouring resin.
