How do I save my motorcycle battery?

Maintain the motorcycle battery necessary and even necessary if we want to ensure its longevity. Be aware that the battery is on the list of so-called wearing parts. This means that it was not designed to last forever and actually has a limited lifespan.

However, some simple steps can increase its durability. We can postpone this momentous moment as long as possible to save money. How to properly care for your motorcycle battery? By regularly servicing the battery: charge level, filling, storage temperature, etc. In good condition, you can effectively save from 2 to 10 years!

Read all of our tips for caring for your motorcycle battery and ensuring a long life.

Motorcycle Battery Care: Regular Maintenance

As with all parts of a motorcycle, it is important to pay special attention to the battery. Maintaining a motorcycle battery basically consists of three tasks: ensuring a constant charging voltage, ensuring that the terminals are always in good condition, and ensuring that there is always an adequate supply of electrolyte. If these 3 points are met, you should not have problems with the battery: difficult or impossible start, breakdown or malfunction of the car.

Maintenance of the motorcycle battery: checking the voltage

One wrong charging voltage is one of the most common causes of premature battery wear. If the voltage falls below a certain limit, it may not even be possible to recover the battery.

Want to keep your battery in good condition for as long as possible? Therefore, check the charging voltage at least once every six months if you use your motorcycle heavily, and once a quarter if you have not used it for a long time.

How can this check be carried out? You can check with a voltmeter. If the latter indicates a voltage from 12 to 13 V, then everything is in order. You can also use a smart charger. Even if the voltage is normal, a small so-called "trickle charge" can further extend the battery life.

Maintenance of the motorcycle battery: checking the terminals

Performance and, as a consequence, battery life are also affected by terminal status... If they are clean and in good condition, your battery will be able to perform optimally for longer.

Therefore, do not forget to keep them in this state: regularly clean them and remove deposits and crystals, if any. First of all, there should be no oxidation.

Please note that if the terminals break, the battery becomes unusable. The only solution in this case is to replace it.

Motorcycle Battery Maintenance: Checking Acid Level

To keep your scooter or motorcycle battery in good condition for a long time, you should also make sure that the acid level is always sufficient.

Therefore, you should check it regularly. How? "Or" What? Quite simply, if you have a classic drum kit, look into it. If the electrolyte level is above the "minimum" mark, everything is in order. On the other hand, if it is at this level or falls below, you have to react.

It is very important to restore the acid level to the correct level. If you do not have electrolyte on hand, you can use demineralized water expect. But be careful, this is the only thing you can add. It is not recommended to use either mineral or tap water.

How do I save my motorcycle battery?

How do I save my motorcycle battery in winter?

In winter, the battery is especially fragile than at any other time of the year. The cold can really make him lose up to 50% charge, or even more when the temperature drops. This is especially true if the motorcycle is stationary for a long time. That's why there are a few tips for caring for your battery during the cold season.

Therefore, if you are not planning on using it in the winter, there are some precautions you need to take. First, do not leave the battery on. Disable it completely to save somewhere. But before doing this, make sure that the charging voltage and electrolyte level are still normal.

If the voltage is not correct, please charge the battery before storing. If the amount of acid is no longer sufficient (at least the minimum), add more to restore the acid level. Only then can the battery be stored in a dry place at room temperature... After storage, do not forget to carry out these checks at least once every 2 months during immobilization.

All these minor maintenance costs will keep you from completely draining your battery when winter passes.
