The State of California does not require a security check or VIN to register a vehicle; however, California requires all vehicles to pass a smog test, with a few exceptions. Inspection certificates are issued by the state and can offer those looking for an automotive technician job a great way to build their resume.
California Vehicle Inspection License
To become a certified California smog inspector, a mechanic must complete two levels of state training and pass a state exam.
Level 1 training is for mechanics with little to no experience with smog and emission control systems. If the mechanic is ASE A6, A8 and L1 certified; or they have an associate's degree and one year of practical work experience; or they have two years of practical experience and have completed BAR specific training, in which case they may skip Level 1 training.
This course must be completed at a BAR certified school and consists of 68 hours.
Level 2 training is required for all mechanics who wish to become licensed smog inspectors. This course consists of 28 hours and must be completed at a BAR certified school.
After completing the course and passing the state exam, a mechanic must complete a four-hour BAR-certified renewal training every two years to keep their smog inspector license valid.
Which vehicles must pass inspection in California?
The following exceptions are the only scenarios in which a vehicle is not required to pass a safety inspection in the State of California:
Diesel vehicles older than model year 1997 or GVW over 14,000 lbs.
Electric or gas vehicles with a GVW over 14,000 pounds.
Motorcycles
Trailers
Gasoline vehicles older than model year 1975.
Vehicles subject to inspection must be re-tested for smog every two years and when ownership changes. A smog check must be completed within 90 days of the registration date to be valid for renewal.
