How to Become a Certified Mobile Vehicle Inspector (Certified State Vehicle Inspector) in Iowa

In most states, vehicle owners must pass a vehicle inspection before they can legally register a vehicle. Inspection certificates are issued by the state and can offer those looking for an automotive technician job a great way to build their resume.

Where is training offered for vehicle inspectors in Iowa?

Iowa does not have a state commercial vehicle inspector training program. Instead, training can be found in auto mechanic schools, in auto mechanic positions in car parks, or in garages servicing commercial vehicles. If you want to learn more about how to become an Iowa Commercial Vehicle Inspector Certification, find a job in the Automotive Technician that offers training courses that include certification.

The state of Iowa requires two different types of vehicle inspections:

  • Vehicle Identification Number or VIN, checking all vehicles that have been marked as WALK. This screening must be conducted by a peace officer certified by the Iowa Academy of Law Enforcement.

  • Commercial Vehicle Inspection on any truck that is used in trade and has a gross vehicle weight of over 10,000 pounds. This test can be performed by anyone with a proper certification as an auto mechanic, even the owner of the vehicle.

Iowa Mobile Vehicle Inspector Qualification

To inspect commercial vehicles in Iowa, an auto service technician must have the following qualifications:

  • Must have completed a state or federal training program in which the technician has received a certificate of qualification to conduct commercial vehicle safety inspections, OR

  • Must have a combination of training and experience that is at least one year. This may include time spent participating in a manufacturer-sponsored training program, time spent in auto mechanic school, time spent as an automotive technician in a commercial fleet or garage, or time spent as a commercial vehicle inspector in another state.

When inspecting a commercial vehicle, the mechanic should also conduct a thorough inspection of the brake system. To qualify as a brake inspector, a mechanic must meet the same requirements as above, except that their training or experience, or both, must include training in brakes and braking systems.
