How to install an LCD monitor in a car

Vehicles are increasingly equipped with facilities that can entertain all passengers during a trip or provide guidance during a long journey. Installing an LCD monitor in your car will add spectacle and practicality. The LCD monitor can be used to watch DVDs, video games or GPS navigation systems.

Many vehicle owners invest in LCD monitors designed to be viewed behind the vehicle. This type of LCD monitor is known as a rear view camera surveillance system. The monitor is activated when the vehicle is in reverse and lets the driver know what is behind the vehicle.

LCD monitors can be located in three places in the car: in the middle of the dashboard or in the console area, on the ceiling or inner roof of SUVs or vans, or attached to the headrests of the front seats.

A dashboard-mounted LCD monitor is typically used for navigation and video. Most LCD monitors have a touch screen and standard video memory.

Most LCD monitors mounted on the ceiling or inner roof of an SUV or van are typically only used for watching video or television. Headphone jacks are usually installed next to the passenger seat for easy access so passengers can listen to videos without distracting the driver.

Step 1: Park your vehicle on a level, firm surface..

Step 4: Open the car hood to disconnect the battery.. Remove the ground cable from the negative battery terminal, turning off power to the entire vehicle.

Installing the LCD monitor in the dashboard:

Step 5: Remove the dashboard. Remove the mounting screws on the dashboard where the monitor will be installed.

Remove the dashboard. If you plan to reuse the dashboard, you will need to trim the panel to fit around the monitor.

Step 6 Remove the LCD monitor from the package.. Install the monitor in the dashboard.

Step 7: Locate the Power Wire. This wire should only supply power to the monitor when the key is in the "on" or "accessory" position.

Connect the power cord to the monitor. You may need to lengthen the wire.

• AttentionA: You may need to connect your own power supply to the monitor. Make sure the power supply is connected to a terminal or wire that only receives power when the key is in the "on" or "accessory" position. To do this, you will need a DVOM (digital volt/ohmmeter) to check the power to the circuit with the key turned off and on.

• A warningA: Do not attempt to connect to a power source using an object connected to the car's computer. If the LCD monitor were to short internally, it is possible that the car's computer could also short out.

Step 8: Connect the remote power to the key source.. If necessary, install additional wires to power the device.

Use butt connectors to connect wires together. If you are going to connect to a circuit, use a connector to connect the wires.

Mounting the LCD monitor on a ceiling or inside roof:

Step 9: Remove the caps from the handrails in the cabin.. Remove the handrails from the rear passenger side.

Step 10: Loosen molding over passenger doors.. This allows you to find a roof support that is only a few inches away from the lip in the headliner.

Step 11: Use a tape measure to measure the center point of the headlining.. Press firmly on the headlining with your fingertips to feel for the support bar.

Mark the area with masking tape.

• Attention: Make sure you double measure and check the location of the markings.

Step 12: Measure the distance from the side to the side of the car. Once you have determined the center of the support rod, mark an X at that location with a permanent marker on the tape.

Step 13: Take the mounting plate and align it to X.. Use a marker to mark the mounting hose on the tape.

Step 14: Drill a hole where you made the mounting marks.. Do not drill into the car roof.

Step 15 Locate the power source on the roof next to the monitor arm.. Cut a small hole in the fabric on the roof with a utility knife.

Step 16: Straighten the Hanger. Attach the new wire to the hanger and thread it through the hole you made and out through the molding you folded back.

Step 17: Insert the wire into the lamp's power circuit only when the key is on.. Make sure you use one size larger wire to reduce heat and drag.

Step 18: Mount the Mounting Plate to the Ceiling. Screw the fixing screws into the ceiling support strip.

• AttentionA: If you plan to use your stereo system to play audio, you will need to run the RCA wires from the cut hole into the glove box. This results in you having to remove the molding and lift the carpet all the way to the floor to hide the wires. Once the wires are in the glove box, you can add adapters to send them to your stereo and connect to the RCA output channel.

Step 19 Install the LCD monitor on the bracket. Connect the wires to the monitor.

Make sure the wires are hidden under the LCD monitor base.

• AttentionA: If you plan to use an FM modulator, you will need to connect the power and ground wires to the modulator. Most modulators fit perfectly under the glove compartment next to the stereo. You can connect to the fuse box for the power supply, which is only active when the key is in the "on" or "accessory" position.

Step 20: Put the molding in place over the car doors and secure it.. Install the handrails back to the molding where they came off.

Put on the caps to cover the screws. If you removed any other coverings or removed the carpet, be sure to secure the coverings and put the carpet back in place.

Installing the LCD monitor on the front seat backs:

Step 21: Measure the inside and outside diameter of the rack for a proper fit..

Step 22: Remove the headrest from the seat.. Some vehicles have tabs that you push in to make removal easier.

Other cars have a pin hole that must be pressed with a paperclip or a pick to remove the headrest.

• Attention: If you plan to use a headrest and install a flip-down LCD monitor, you will need to measure the headrest and install the LCD monitor on the headrest. Drill 4 holes to mount the LCD bracket. You will be drilling the steel headrest brace. You can then attach the bracket to the headrest and install the LCD monitor onto the bracket. Most LCD monitors are pre-installed in the headrest, just like in your car. In essence, you just change the headrest to another one, however, this is more expensive.

Step 23: Remove the uprights from the headrest.. Replace the headrest with one that has an LCD monitor.

Step 24: Slide the uprights up the wires to the new LCD headrest.. Screw the uprights tightly to the headrest.

Step 25: Remove the seat back. You will need a flathead screwdriver to pry off the back of the seat.

• Attention: If your seats are fully upholstered, you must unbutton the upholstery. Fully recline the seat and locate the plastic clasp. Gently pry at the seam to open and then gently spread the plastic teeth.

Step 26: Install the headrest with LCD monitor on the seat.. You will need to run the wires through the mounting holes on the seat posts at the back of the seat.

Step 27: Pass the wires through the seat material.. After installing the headrest, you will need to run the wires through the seat fabric or leather material directly under the seat.

Put a rubber hose or something similar made of rubber over the wires for protection.

Step 28: Route the wires behind the metal seatback bracket.. It's a snug fit, so be sure to slide the rubber hose over the wires right above the metal brace.

This will prevent the wire from chafing against the metal seat brace.

• Attention: There are two cables coming out of the bottom of the chair: a power cable and an A/V input cable.

Step 29: Attach the seat back together.. If you had to reupholster the seat, join the teeth together.

Close the seam to secure the seat together. Return the seat to its original position. The kit includes a DC power connector for connecting the power cord to the vehicle. You have the option to connect an LCD monitor or use the cigarette lighter port.

DC Power Connector Hard Wiring:

Step 30: Locate the power wire to the DC power connector.. This wire is usually bare and has a red fusible link.

Step 31: Connect the power cord to the power seat.. Make sure this seat only works when the key is in the ignition in the "on" or "accessory" position.

If you don't have power seats, you will need to run a wire to the fuse box under the carpet in your car and place it in a port that is only active when the key is in the ignition and in the "on" or "accessory" position. job title.

Step 32 Locate the mounting screw to the seat bracket that attaches to the floor of the car.. Remove the screw from the bracket.

Use 320 grit sandpaper to clean the paint off the bracket.

Step 33: Place the eyelet end of the black wire on the bracket.. The black wire is the ground wire to the DC power connector.

Insert the screw back into the bracket and hand tighten. When you tighten the screw tight, be careful not to twist the wire through the lug.

Step 34: Connect the DC power connector cable to the cable protruding from the seatback.. Roll up the cable and tie the slack and DC power connector to the seat bracket.

Be sure to leave some slack to allow the seat to move back and forth (if the seat moves).

Step 35: Connect the A/V input cable of the LCD Monitor Kit to the A/V input cable protruding from the seat.. Roll up the cable and tie it under the seat so it doesn't get in the way.

This cable is only used if you are going to install another device such as a Playstation or other input device.

Step 36 Reconnect the ground cable to the negative battery post.. Remove the nine volt fuse from the cigarette lighter.

Step 37: Tighten the battery clamp. Make sure the connection is good.

Part 3 of 3: Checking the installed LCD monitor

Step 1: Turn the ignition to the auxiliary or working position..

If you installed an LCD monitor with a DVD player, open the monitor and install the DVD. Make sure the DVD is playing. Connect your headphones to the headphone jack on the LCD monitor or to the remote jack and check the sound.
