How to get a car out of a skid?

How to get a car out of a skid? We are most likely to skid in the winter, but dead ends can happen all year round. So, let's train in that case.

Bad weather, leaves on the road or wet surfaces can cause your vehicle to skid. Every driver should be ready for this. Most often in such a situation, we act instinctively, which does not mean that this is correct.

Understeer

In common parlance, drivers say about skidding that "the front did not turn" or "the rear ran away." If the car does not obey us when turning the steering wheel and we drive straight all the time, then we skidded due to understeer. The acting centrifugal forces take the car out of the corner.

The key to overcoming slippage is self-control. Steering should not be deepened, as twisted wheels impair handling. In the case of a deep turn, not only will we not stop in time, but we will also lose control of the car, which can lead to a collision with an obstacle. When we are slipping, we should also not add gas. So we will not restore traction, but only worsen the controllability of the car and risk getting unpleasant consequences.

The way to deal with skidding is to combine emergency braking with smooth steering. A gradual loss of speed during braking will allow you to regain control and control understeer. The modern ABS system allows you to effectively brake and steer the car.

Oversteer

If, when cornering, we get the impression that the rear of the car is running out of the corner, then in this case we are dealing with skidding during oversteer.

The phenomenon of oversteer is more common in rear-wheel drive vehicles or as a result of driver error releasing the gas and turning the steering wheel. This is due to the shift in the center of gravity to the front wheels and the relief of the rear axle of the car. The cause of skidding and oversteer can be too high speed, slippery surfaces or even sudden movement on a straight road, for example, when changing lanes, the expert adds.

How to deal with such slippage? The most reasonable behavior is the so-called imposition of the opposite, i.e. turning the steering wheel in the direction in which the rear of the car was thrown and emergency braking. Pressing the clutch and brake at the same time will increase the load on all wheels and allow you to quickly regain traction and stop safely. Remember, however, that such reactions require training under the supervision of driving instructors.

Increasingly, car manufacturers are designing cars with slightly understeer. When drivers are in danger, they take their feet off the gas pedal, making it easier to regain control of the car in the event of understeer.
