How To: Hack Aux Port In Your Old Car Stereo For Less Than $3
Most newer stereos come with an aux port built in, but if you're driving an older car, you're usually stuck with a radio or CD player, and we all know both of those options suck.
So instead of paying the $95 the dealer wanted to charge or replacing the stereo entirely, Redditor Eplodis took matters into his own hands and cracked the audio-in port for less than $3.
Here's what he used:
- Resistor 1.5 kOhm
- CD-ROM audio cable
- 2 feet of speaker wire
- 3.5mm audio jack
After installing the audio jack, he cut the CD-ROM cable in half to serve as a connector. Using his model's pinout (found online), he found the resistance value needed for the stereo to recognize the input.
The resistor is connected between the two trigger pins and the rest of the wires are connected to the pins on the audio jack. He used duct tape to secure the wires in place, then drilled a hole for the port and put the stereo back in place.
When everything is closed, you can't even tell that it has been changed. Let's hope the duct tape sticks!
