How to change the key for Lexus

Lexus luxury vehicles are designed with a high level of security in mind, including engine immobilizers. According to Lexus, the engine immobilizer acts as an anti-theft system, preventing the vehicle from starting without the correct key. Inside the Lexus ignition key is a transponder chip that sends a code to the engine computer. The code must match the code programmed in the immobilizer. As a result, you must go to your local Lexus dealer or a high security workshop to change your Lexus key.

Contact a Lexus Dealer

Step 1

Write down your vehicle identification number (VIN). As a rule, the VIN is located on the dashboard under the windshield. The number will be on a small metal plate and will consist of 17 characters. A unique number identifies your vehicle.

Step 2

Gather proof of ownership. Find your vehicle registration number or title and your driver's license. You will need information to prove that you are the owner of the vehicle.

Contact your Lexus dealer. Browse your local dealer phone listings or visit Lexus.com, enter your zip code in the Find a Dealer field, and press Enter on your keyboard. Call the dealer and ask for a replacement key.

Contact Locksmith

Step 1

Find a high security locksmith. Visit Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA.org). Lexus encourages this association to find professional locksmiths who can replace your Lexus key. Click "Find a locksmith" in the upper right corner of the navigation window. On the search screen, check the "Cars" box and enter your zip code.

Step 2

Contact a locksmith. Call the locksmith of your choice and explain the situation. Be sure to let the locksmith know that you need a spare security key. Find out what information you will need to provide. You will most likely be asked to show your driver's license and proof of ownership of the Lexus.

Arrange a reunion. Make an appointment and find out the total cost of the service.
