Replacement and repair of shock absorbers Mercedes E Class

When shock absorbers break down on a Mercedes E-class, each driver faces the question of which one is better to replace. Let's talk about the types of shock absorbers, their cost and feelings after installation. When Mercedes E-class shock absorbers break down, every driver faces the question of which one to replace. Let's talk about the types of shock absorbers, their cost and feelings after installation.

Having asked any motorist what is the difference between a foreign car and a domestic one, I think anyone will answer with build quality and comfort. Often, time-tested foreign cars are in the greatest demand. Regardless of the age and configuration of a foreign car, sooner or later the suspension begins to lose its comfort properties, since our roads leave much to be desired.

German Mercedes cars are considered the most practical in terms of quality and comfort, unfortunately there are many nuances, spare parts are not as cheap as for domestic cars. Comfort is immediately lost and you simply cannot physically drive for a long time. In our case, it will be a Mercedes-Benz E-class car. Shock absorbers often fail.

Breakage of shock absorbers

The first sign of such a reason affects the comfort and controllability of the Mercedes E-class, the knock of the steering wheel begins, the stability of maneuvers is disturbed, and the knocks under the hood in the area of \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbthe shelf increase. I will say that the sensations are not pleasant, since the trip will resemble rather an uncomfortable movement, but similar to riding a log on rails. Each bump or hole in the road will take a hit either on the steering wheel or on the seat of the Mercedes, and the German car will turn into a Cossack.

The fact that the shock absorbers are gone can be evidenced not only by knocks and bumps. This will also be visible to the naked eye, often a Mercedes will sit on the side where the shock absorber or air suspension disappeared. As for the latter, it will be very clearly visible, and the roar in the cabin will be no better than in the old Zhiguli.

In modern foreign cars, there can be both a classic suspension on shock absorbers and an air suspension built on a more complex system that works in air. We will consider a classic suspension based on shock absorbers, without pneumatic elements.

Shock absorbers are of two types gas and diesel. Some car enthusiasts prefer to put more abruptly, but for me personally, due to the fact that they were installed at the factory, it was difficult to change them. At the same time, it is strictly necessary to observe the Mercedes license plates on these parts, because the length also matters.

It happens that in order to re-evaluate the Mercedes, it is recommended to drive higher (longer), but do not forget that this leads to a loss of vehicle stability on the road. If you put such shock absorbers on the front of the car, then it will obviously not be beautiful, and in the races the car will rise.

Replacing shock absorbers Mercedes E Class

A typical malfunction of the Mercedes E-class shock absorber is an oil stain. Scratches are clearly visible on the dusty and dirty surface of the shock absorber. The replacement process itself is not very complicated, but it will take time. Shock absorbers are recommended to be changed in pairs, two front or two rear, so that the wear is even. So if you replace only on one side, then the E-class Mercedes will pull in one direction and the car will not stand steadily on the road. There will be safe and stable movement in pairs.

Let's start with the front shock absorbers, as most often they become unusable and fall into potholes and potholes in the first place. To do this, we need two jacks, or a jack and a brace under the shelf, keys and an inspection hole, since it will be much more convenient to change it. Replacing the shock absorber on both sides is symmetrical, so consider the replacement process on one side. Like all work with the suspension of a car, we start by removing the wheel, lifting the Mercedes, remove the wheel and put the support under the lever or under the lower link so that it has a stop.

Next, we lower the Mercedes a little so that the spring is compressed and unscrew the damper from the glass, raise the hood in advance and loosen the screws on the glass. This is done to weaken the spring force and make it easier to remove the shock absorber. Having unscrewed the mounting bolts to the glass under the hood, we begin to raise the Mercedes with a jack to relieve pressure on the support. Then we remove the bracket from under the lever and lift it further until the spring is completely weakened, sometimes they use a special puller that compresses the spring and makes it much easier to replace, but unfortunately such a device is not needed every day, and it costs a lot of money.

There are damping systems where the spring is located separately from the shock absorber, in such cases it is not necessary to disassemble and compress the spring. It is enough to loosen the hub and the lower part of the Mercedes to a level to which it will be possible to remove the shock absorber when folded (you can compress the rod, so you bend the shock absorber and increase the clearance for its removal). Having pulled out the top bar, it is worth unscrewing the bottom bracket. Then carefully remove the old shock absorber and try a new one, the same size or different.

When buying, check with the seller which of them are right for you, since one model and brand can have different shock absorbers of different years. Don't forget to bring accessories, shock absorber cushions, too. Having removed the old shock absorber, we put on a new one, in the reverse order we do the procedure. If there is a spring inside, it will have to be tightened.

Often in the Mercedes E-Class, this is immediately evident, even without a service book. Without special equipment, it is best to do this together. We first insert the spring with the shock absorber, lifting the spring up, tighten the lower shock absorber bracket, and then replacing the bracket under the arm to support the weight of the Mercedes a little, since this car is heavy, we begin to lower it slowly, jack it up until the shock absorber rod appears above the glass. Next, we twist the bolt into the glass, thus pulling the damper and tightening the spring.

After the whole procedure, we jack up the Mercedes again to install the wheel and tighten the fastening nuts. We carry out a similar procedure on the other hand, there is nothing to worry about.

Shock absorber repair or new

When choosing shock absorbers, pay attention to the color and markings. Some manufacturers may produce different types of shock absorbers for the same make and model, these may be classic ones, which are usually installed at the factory. Maybe a sporty option, they are tough, but keep the Mercedes E-Class more stable on the road and in corners.

Or soft shock absorbers, for those who drive only on asphalt, preferring silence and comfort in the car. They often differ in lettering or color. But it's better to clarify the seller. There is nothing difficult to replace, the main thing to remember is why you disassemble. With the Mercedes E-class spring, be careful and careful, as it is very stiff and can be thrown if you squeeze it hard.

As for the repair of shock absorbers, it is carried out, but very rarely. Usually it's not for long, a month, two at most, and the same problem will happen again, and the repair cost is half the cost of a new shock absorber. If the shock absorber is leaking, then there is no point in repairing it. Therefore, it is better to install new ones than to repair old ones three times.

The cost of replacing and repairing shock absorbers

The price of Mercedes shock absorbers is very diverse, and it cannot be said that they do not cost more than $ 100, for example, in an E-class Mercedes, depending on the configuration and year of manufacture, they can cost from $ 50 to $ 2000 per shock absorber. The type of shock also affects the price, whether it's sporty, comfortable or classic. The most common and high-quality manufacturers: KYB, BOGE, Monroe, Sachs, Bilstein, Optimal.

As for the cost of replacement, it will also depend on the brand of car and the type of shock absorber installed. The average price of replacing a pair of front shock absorbers for a Mercedes E-class is 19 rubles. The rear ones are a little cheaper - 000 rubles.

The replacement must not be delayed, as a failed shock absorber will pull other parts of the chassis and steering along with it.
