How to replace the air pump check valve

The air pump check valve lets air into the exhaust system. It also prevents exhaust gases from re-entering the system during a flashback or failure.

The air injection system is used to reduce hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions. The system does this by supplying oxygen to the exhaust manifolds when the engine is cold and to the catalytic converter during normal operation.

The air pump is used to force air into the exhaust system. The powertrain control module (PCM) directs the forced air to the correct location by operating the control valve. A one-way check valve is also used to prevent exhaust gases from being pushed back through the system in the event of a backfire or system failure.

If you notice any signs of a malfunctioning air pump check valve, you need to replace it.

Part 1 of 2. Locate and remove the old air supply check valve.

You will need a few basic tools to safely and effectively replace the air supply check valve.

Necessary materials

Step 3: Remove the check valve from the pipe assembly.. Using a wrench, carefully remove the valve from the pipe assembly.

  • Attention: In some cases, the valve may be held in place by a pair of bolts that must be removed.

Part 2 of 2: Install the New Air Check Valve

Step 1: Install a new air supply check valve.. Install a new air check valve to the pipe assembly and tighten with a wrench.
