How to replace a lost or stolen car in California

Like all other states, California requires vehicle owners to own their vehicle for a number of different purposes. If you decide to sell the car, you will need a title. You will also need it to exchange it and register it in a new state if you decide to move. If you have just moved to California, you will need a vehicle title deed in order to register it.

The problem with titles is that they are easy to lose. They can also be stolen or damaged by fires, floods and accidents. With the exception of keeping your title in a safe deposit box, it can be difficult to protect this vital document. Luckily, you can get a duplicate name if yours is lost, stolen, or damaged. However, you will need to follow certain specific steps prescribed by the State of California.

You have two options to replace your lost, stolen or damaged vehicle in California. You can do this in person at your local DMV office or by mail. However, both will require the same first steps.

Before applying for a duplicate title:

  • Download Form REG 227 (Declaration of Duplicate Right) from the California DMV website. Print it out and fill it out. Make sure the following information is provided:
  • Owner's name (full name)
  • Owner's current address
  • Owner's driver's license number
  • car license plate
  • Explanation of what happened to the previous heading
  • Owner's signature
  • Damaged title (if possible, not required in all cases)

To apply for a duplicate title in person:

  • Make an appointment with your local DMV office.
  • Bring the completed form and all other information.
  • Pay the $20 replacement fee.

To apply for a duplicate title by mail:

  • Fill out the form and collect other documents.
  • Include a $20 replacement fee.
  • Submit your information to the following address:
