How to register a car in Minnesota

When moving to Minnesota, you will need to register your vehicle. To complete the registration process, you will need to visit the Minnesota Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) or mail in the documents. Make sure you register your car within 60 days of moving into the area to avoid late fees. When you go to DVS to register your car, here is what you will need to bring with you:

  • Vehicle name with your name on it
  • Driver's license
  • Completed Vehicle Ownership and Registration Application
  • The odometer reading on your car
  • A copy of the car rental agreement, if any.
  • Vehicle insurance with personal injury coverage of at least $30,000.

If you are a Minnesota resident and purchased your car from a dealership, they will usually take care of the registration process. Be sure to get all documents from registration so you can then get a tag for the vehicle.

Minnesota residents who purchased a vehicle from an individual must bring the following items with them to register the vehicle:

  • Ownership of the vehicle
  • Completed Vehicle Ownership or Registration Form
  • Your driving license
  • Vehicle odometer reading
  • Proof of valid car insurance
  • A copy of the pledge agreement if you are still paying for the car

When you are about to register your vehicle, you will have to pay a fee to complete this process. Here are the fees you can expect to pay:

  • The application fee is $10.
  • Vehicle license plates cost $6 for a double number and $4.50 for a single.
  • To register a motorcycle, you will have to pay $4.50.

Before you go to register your car, you need to make sure that you have the appropriate insurance policy. Without a valid insurance policy, you will not be able to register your vehicle. If you have questions about this process, be sure to visit the Minnesota Department of Motor Vehicles website.
