How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Car in Wyoming

Are you familiar with the name of a car? This is proof that you are the owner of your vehicle. So why is this so important? Well, if you have any plans to sell your car in the future, transfer ownership, or even use it as collateral, you will need to show ownership of that car. So, what happens if your car is missing or possibly stolen? While it may seem quite stressful, the good news is that you can get a duplicate vehicle relatively easily.

In Wyoming, motorists can obtain this duplicate through the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT). Those whose title has been destroyed, lost, stolen or destroyed may receive a duplicate. You can apply in person or by mail.

Here are the process steps:

Personally

  • Visit the WY DOT office closest to you and see if they handle paperwork.

  • You will need to complete a duplicate Statement of Title and Affidavit (Form 202-022). This form must be signed by all vehicle owners and notarized.

  • You will need to have the car model, make, year of manufacture and VIN, as well as a registration certificate with you. Photo ID will also be required.

  • There is a $15 fee for a duplicate name.

By mail

  • Follow the same steps as above by completing the form, signing it and notarizing it. Be sure to attach copies of the requested information.

  • Attach a payment of $15.

  • Submit the information to your local Wyoming County Clerk. The State of Wyoming deals with duplicate titles per county, not statewide.
