If you are a driver, you already know that there are many rules that you must follow when traveling on the roads of Delaware. However, the rules of the road involve much more than just what you do while driving. They also include the vehicle, its components and its general safety. One area where you should make sure you have a complaint is the windshield. Below are the windshield laws in Delaware.

windshield requirements

  • Delaware requires all cars to have windshields, with the exception of vintage and classic cars that were made without them.

  • Outdoor rods and antiques may have anodized glass if that was the original material used by the manufacturer.

  • All vehicles must have operating windshield wipers that effectively remove rain, snow and other forms of moisture and are under the control of the driver.

  • Any vehicle manufactured after July 1, 1937 must have a windshield made from safety glass, that is, glass that is either processed or manufactured using methods that reduce the chance of the glass breaking or shattering in the event of an impact or breakage.

Cracks and chips

Delaware complies with federal regulations regarding chips and cracks. These include the following:

  • Windshields must be free of damage and discoloration in the area extending from two inches from the top of the windshield to the top of the steering wheel.

  • A single crack is allowed that does not intersect or intersect with another crack, provided it does not obstruct the driver's view.

  • Chips and cracks less than ¾ inch in diameter are acceptable as long as they are not within three inches of another similar area of damage.

Obstacles

Delaware also has strict regulations regarding any type of windshield obstruction.

  • Vehicles may not have posters, signs, or any other opaque material displayed on the windshield unless required by law.

  • Any removable windshield decal may not be left hanging on the rearview mirror while the vehicle is in motion.

Window tinting

Window tinting is permitted in Delaware, subject to the following rules:

  • Front side windows must allow at least 70% of the light into the vehicle.

  • Anyone who installs a tint for commercial purposes that does not comply with these regulations can be fined between $100 and $500, along with a refund of the amount charged for installation.
