How to replace the wiper gear assembly

Windshield wipers protect car windows from rain and debris. The wiper gearbox transfers power from the wiper motor to the wiper arms.

The wiper gear is a mechanical device that transmits power from the wiper motor to the wiper arms. The wiper gear assembly, usually made from forged steel components, is typically two or three sections, with some assemblies using four linkage sections to complete the system. The wiper gear assembly is designed in such a way that a linkage drives the wipers in full motion across the windshield during use.

Step 1: Removing the wiper blades. Now you want to remove the wiper blades to gain access to the hood where the wiper motor is located. You should take a windshield wiper removal tool to take the pressure off them so you can take them off and put them aside. There may be clips on the hood holding it in place, you will need to remove them with a clip remover or any other suitable tool.

Step 2: Remove the old wiper gear.. Now that you have gained access to the wiper gear, you can now disconnect the wiper motor and also unscrew the wiper gear assembly. Once you have this removed, you can remove the gearbox assembly with the motor attached and get ready to remove the motor from the gearbox.

Step 3: Removing the wiper motor from the wiper gear. You now want to remove the wiper motor from the transmission in preparation for reinstalling the new wiper transmission assembly to the vehicle.

Part 2 of 2: Installing a new wiper gear

Step 1: Install the new wiper gear.. You now want to reinstall the wiper motor back onto the wiper gear assembly and get ready to place it back into the hood housing.

Now you want to start screwing it back to the hood body and put it back in, then replace the hood plastic on top and reinstall the clips.

Step 2: Installing the wiper arms back on the vehicle. Once you have finished installing the new engine and assembling the hood, you can proceed and install the wiper arms and blades onto the wiper gear assembly.

Now you want to tighten them to the correct torque then you can make sure you put them in the right place so that when you activate them they clear your windshield properly, if you don't you can always adjust them.

Replacing the wiper gear assembly is a very important part of keeping the wipers working properly because the gear actually allows the wiper arms and blades to move in a sweeping motion. Without knowing how to do it right, you won't be able to remove water, snow, or debris from your windshield, so you won't be able to see the road clearly while driving.
