How to register a car in New Mexico

Moving to a new area brings a lot of emotions. As you settle into your new life in New Mexico, you need to make sure you do your best to comply with all laws. It is important that your vehicle is registered with the New Mexico Interior Ministry. You will have 30 days after you become a resident to register your vehicle before being fined for being late. You will have to personally appear at the Ministry of Internal Affairs in order to put your car on state registration. Before starting this process, here are some things you need to bring with you:

  • Ownership of your car
  • Your completed application for title and vehicle registration
  • Proof of car insurance
  • Your driving license
  • Emission Verification Certificate
  • Documents such as invoices showing that you are a New Mexico resident.

For those New Mexico residents who purchase a vehicle from a dealership, the registration process will most likely be handled by the lot from which the purchase was made. You will need to make sure that you have received all documentation from registration in order to obtain a license plate for the vehicle.

If the vehicle in question was purchased from a private seller, then you will be responsible for registering it. The following things will be needed to get this car to the registration it needs:

  • Completed Vehicle Ownership and Registration Statement
  • Vehicle name with your name on it
  • Proof that you have vehicle insurance
  • Your driving license
  • Proof that you are a resident
  • Documents of the custodian, if applicable

Here are the registration fees you may pay during this process:

  • Passenger cars registered for one year will cost between $27 and $62.
  • Passenger cars, which will be registered for two years, will cost between $54 and $124.
  • If it takes more than 30 days to register your car, you will be fined $10.

You will need to check your vehicle in order to register it with the state of New Mexico. If you have additional questions regarding this process, be sure to visit the New Mexico DMV website.
