How to register a car in Virginia

There are so many different things to consider when moving to Virginia. Making sure you take the steps necessary to register a car in that state should be at the top of your priority list. You will have 30 days to register your car in Virginia before you have to pay a late fee. To obtain a vehicle registration, you will need to contact your local DMV. Before you go to the DMV to get your registration, you will need to take the time to get all the required paperwork. Here are some things you will need when trying to get registered:

  • You will need to bring a completed application for registration
  • ID and your address
  • You will need a certificate stating that your vehicle has been inspected
  • Proof that you have insurance
  • If you have a title from another state, you will need to bring it

If you are a resident of Virginia and rent a new car, you will also need to register it. For this you will need the following items:

  • Ownership or lien agreement with your name on it
  • Your driving license
  • Insurance card
  • Registration application

You must be prepared to pay some fees when registering a car. The fees you will pay in Virginia will be based on the following criteria:

  • Gross Vehicle Weight
  • The license plate you want
  • How long do you want to keep the car registered (maximum one to two years)

You will also need to pass a safety and emissions test if you live in the following Virginia counties:
