If you are a rock climber, you need a vehicle that will get you where you need to go, even over rough terrain. Sometimes you may live outside of your car, so you also need a roomy and comfortable setup. We've reviewed a few used cars that we think are suitable for rock climbers and narrowed down the selection to the Volkswagen bus, Toyota Tacoma, Subaru Outback, Mercedes Sprinter, and Chrysler Town and Country.

  • Volkswagen van: We love the Volkswagen bus. It's practically an icon and can be seen everywhere climbers have frequented for over 50 years. There's plenty of room and space on the VW bus, so whether you're traveling alone or with friends, you'll have more than enough room for all your climbing gear. They are also fun to set up and with a little effort you can have a nice little camper.

  • Toyota Tacoma: We recommend purchasing a camper tarp for the Tacoma to provide shelter in harsh environments. It won't be as comfortable as a real camper, but what you lack in comfort you make up for when it comes to utility. With high ground clearance and all-wheel drive, you will have access to the most remote climbing routes.

  • Subaru Outback: Outback is a universal car. It will take you around the city and then to your climbing destination. If you're not too tall, you'll be able to sleep in it, and the all-wheel drive and excellent ground clearance will get you out into the wild.

  • Mercedes Sprinter: This van is the ideal vehicle for road climbers. Resembling a huge box on wheels, it's built more for comfort than style. For many climbers, this gear is the "Holy Grail". The only drawback is that even used it will be expensive. However, if your pockets are a bit deep, we definitely recommend this outstanding van.

  • Chrysler Town and Country: With nearly 144 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats folded, as well as a roof rack, you'll be able to carry whatever you need to your climbing destination and you can easily unload it when you get there. thanks to the electric tailgate. The front-wheel drive means you'll be able to handle difficult terrain fairly easily.

Climbers are a special breed, and not just any vehicle will do.
