How to start a car in severe frost

how to start a car in frost - advice from experiencedSince it has long been cold outside and the temperature in some regions of the country drops below 20 degrees Celsius, a rather urgent problem for many motorists now is starting the engine in severe frost.

First, I would like to give some recommendations and instructions for drivers regarding the use and application of fuels and lubricants in the winter:

  1. Firstly, it is best to fill your car engine with at least semi-synthetic oil. And in the ideal case, it is recommended to use synthetics. These oils are very resistant to low temperatures and do not freeze as hard as mineral water. This means that it will be much easier for the engine to start when the lubricant in the crankcase is more fluid.
  2. The same can be said about the oil in the gearbox. If possible, also change it to synthetics or semi-synthetics. I don't think it's worth explaining that while the engine is running, the input shaft of the gearbox also rotates, which means that there is a load on the motor. The easier the box turns, the less the load on the internal combustion engine.

Now it is worth dwelling on some practical tips that will help many VAZ owners, and not only, to start the car in frost.

  • If your battery is weak, be sure to charge it so that the starter cranks confidently, even with heavily frozen oil. Check the electrolyte level and top up if necessary.
  • Before starting the starter, depress the clutch pedal and only then start. It should be borne in mind that after starting the engine, the clutch does not need to be released immediately. Let the motor run for at least half a minute to warm up the oil a little. And only then smoothly release the clutch. If at this time the engine starts to stall, depress the pedal again, and hold it until the engine is released and starts to work normally steadily.
  • Many car owners, if they have their own garage, warm up the pallet before starting by substituting an ordinary electric stove under the engine and waiting for a few minutes until the oil warms up a little.
  • In severe frosts, when the air temperature drops below -30 degrees, some car owners install special heaters in the cooling system that operate on a 220 Volt network. They seem to crash into the pipes of the cooling system and begin to heat the coolant, driving it through the system at this time.
  • After the car has started, do not start moving immediately. Let the internal combustion engine run for a few minutes, at least until its temperature reaches at least 30 degrees. Then you can slowly start driving in low gears.

In fact, there are many more tips that seasoned car owners can give. If possible, complete the list of useful cold start procedures below in the comments!
