Naturally, in order to understand what brands of gasoline were in the USSR, it should be remembered that the full development of the oil refining industry took place in the post-war period. It was then that gas stations throughout the country began to receive fuel marked A-56, A-66, A-70 and A-74. The development of the industry proceeded at a rapid pace. Therefore, already a decade later, many types of gasoline changed labels. In the late 60s, Soviet car owners filled the tank with gasoline with the indices A-66, A-72, A-76, A-93 and A-98.
In addition, a fuel mixture appeared at some gas stations. This liquid was a mixture of motor oil and A-72 gasoline. It was possible to refuel a car equipped with a two-stroke engine with such fuel. The same time is also notable for the fact that for the first time gasoline called "Extra" appeared in wide access, which later became the well-known AI-95.
Features of gasoline in the USSR
Having such an assortment for the entire period of the post-war formation of the country, car owners had to be able to distinguish fuel by characteristic features.
For those who refueled the car with A-66 or AZ-66 fuel, it was possible to distinguish the desired liquid by its characteristic orange color. According to GOST, A-66 fuel contained 0,82 grams of thermal power plant per kilogram of gasoline. In this case, the color could be not only orange, but also red. The quality of the obtained product was checked in the following way: the liquid was brought to the extreme boiling point. If the threshold value was equal to 205 degrees, then gasoline was manufactured in compliance with all technologies.
AZ-66 gasoline was produced exclusively for filling stations located in Siberia or the Far North. This fuel was used only under extremely low temperature conditions due to its fractional composition. During the boiling test, the extreme allowable temperature was 190 degrees.
Fuel with markings A-76, as well as AI-98, according to GOSTs, was an exclusively summer type of gasoline. Liquid with any other marking could be used both in summer and in winter. By the way, the supply of gasoline to gas stations was strictly regulated according to the calendar. Thus, summer fuel could be sold from the beginning of April to the first of October.

During Soviet times, gasoline, which was produced under the marking A-76 and AI-93, included a special liquid called an antiknock agent. This additive was designed to increase the anti-knock properties of the product. However, the composition of the additive included a potent toxic substance. In order to warn the consumer about the danger, A-76 fuel was dyed green. The product marked AI-93 was produced with a blue dye.
