The Subaru Legacy is a large business car and Subaru's most expensive flagship sedan. It was originally a compact car, first introduced as a concept car in 1987. Serial production in the USA and Japan began only in 1989. The car was offered with petrol engines ranging from 102 to 280 hp. In 1993, Subaru began production of the second generation Legacy. The car received four-cylinder engines with a capacity of up to 280 horsepower. In 1994, the Legacy Outback off-road pickup truck was introduced. It was developed on the basis of a conventional pickup truck, but with increased ground clearance and off-road body kits. In 1996, this modification became an independent Subaru Outback model.

In 2009, the fifth generation Subaru Legacy debuted. This car was offered with 2.0 and 2.5 engines. Its power ranged from 150 to 265 hp. The engines were driven by either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed "automatic". Production took place in Japan and the USA. Since 2014, the sixth generation Subaru Legacy has been on sale.
