Your transmission has exemplary lifespan and is one of the most reliable parts in your vehicle. Designed to serve "for life" (like a car anyway), it will accompany you without any problems beyond 300 km.

To do this, you only need to do 2 things. Nothing fancy: drive the car trying to shift gears as smoothly as possible by fully depressing the clutch pedal, and drain the gearbox if necessary.

For a manual transmission, it is recommended to make the first oil change after 100 km. In the future, it will need to be changed every 000 km or at least once every 50 years.

First of all, changing the gearbox has nothing to do with changing the engine, although in each case it is about changing the oil. The gearbox must be changed if the oil in it is used up or not enough.

To know when it is time to empty the transmission, look for the following signs:

• It becomes difficult to shift gears when cold or hot and / or gears squeak when shifting gears. This means that the oil is used up.
• The gears jump without your intervention, which can be dangerous and destabilizing: not enough oil is probably due to a leak.
• An automatic transmission has a longer cold start response time, which can mean old or insufficient oil.

Good to know: While these symptoms are not exhaustive, they often indicate an urgent need to drain the transmission fluid. In order not to get there, do not forget to change the gearbox in time!

🚗 How can I extend the life of my transmission?

To extend the (already long) life of your gearbox and transmission, you can apply simple yet effective reflexes:

• Check the level of various fluids regularly, especially oil, and do not wait until it is too late to change the gearbox.
• Don't waste time and react immediately if you hear unusual noises when shifting gears. It is also considered a suspicious smell, a warning light on the dashboard, or a gear lever malfunction. The longer you wait, the more you risk!
• Never apply force to the transmission. It may seem obvious, but one wrong gesture can have serious consequences, especially in the long run.
