Which Land Rover or Range Rover is best for me?

Land Rover is one of the most famous car brands in the world. The company actually invented the SUV as we know it, and its current models are some of the most coveted vehicles on the market.

All of them have certain characteristics. They look great, are fun to drive and know how to turn every trip into a little adventure. They are also practical family cars and their off-road capabilities can get you where many cars can't.

That's all well and good, but it can be difficult to understand the differences between current Land Rover models. Here we detail these differences and answer some important questions to help you decide which Land Rover is right for you.

Let's start with the main reason for the confusion in the Land Rover lineup...

What is the difference between a Land Rover and a Range Rover?

Range Rover is widely known as a brand in its own right, separate from Land Rover. But it's not. Range Rover is actually the name given to luxury models in the Land Rover lineup. Strictly speaking, the full name of the Range Rover is "Land Rover Range Rover". Not quite catchy?

Range Rover models are more focused on style, technology and luxurious comfort than the more practical Land Rovers, though any Range Rover is still a very practical family car capable of tackling all sorts of challenging terrain.

There are currently four Land Rover Range Rover models: Range Rover, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Sport. There are three "regular" Land Rover models: Discovery, Discovery Sport and Defender.

What is the smallest Land Rover?

The smallest Land Rover is the Discovery Sport. It's a mid-sized SUV, about the same size as a Ford Kuga or a Mercedes-Benz GLC. Discovery Sport is one of the best cars of its kind. It has plenty of passenger space, a large trunk, a high-quality interior, and is a joy to drive. It's available with five or seven seats, so it's a great choice for families.

The smallest Range Rover is the Range Rover Evoque. It's the same size as the Discovery Sport and they do use the same mechanical parts. The Evoque has a unique body and interior that makes it more luxurious and a bit sporty. It is spacious and versatile, but only available with five seats.

What is the largest Land Rover?

The Discovery is the largest Land Rover model, followed by the Defender 110 (although the Defender 110 is longer if you add a spare tire on the trunk lid). Defender 90 is shorter than both. It's the same car as the Defender 110, but with less front to rear wheel spacing and two instead of four side doors.

Range Rover is the largest Range Rover model. The standard version is only 4 cm longer than the Land Rover Discovery, but there is also a long wheelbase version that has 20 cm between the front and rear wheels, which creates extra legroom for rear passengers. The Range Rover Sport is shorter and lower than the Range Rover and Land Rover Discovery, although it is still a very large car. The Range Rover Velar is sportier and a bit smaller, although it is significantly larger than the Evoque.

Which Land Rovers are seven-seat?

Some Discovery Sport and Defender models, as well as all Discovery models, have seven seats in three rows. In the Defender and Discovery, the third row is spacious enough for adults to feel comfortable on long journeys, but the Discovery Sport's third-row rear seats are best for kids. Some Defenders have six seats in two rows of three with a narrow middle seat in the front row.

Of the Range Rover lineup, only the Range Rover Sport is available with seven seats, and is a less popular option. Despite the large size of the car, the third-row seats are only for children.

Which Land Rover is best for dog owners?

The sheer boot size in the Land Rover and Range Rover models means each is a great choice if you have a dog (or dogs) that has enough room for your pet(s) to move around or lie down. You can even buy a special Land Rover partition that gives half the trunk to the dog and the other half to your shopping or suitcases.

Some Land Rovers and Range Rover have rear suspension that lowers several inches at the touch of a button, so your dog has fewer steps to get in or out of the trunk. And the Range Rover's top level has a two-piece trunk lid, the lower part of which folds down to form a platform that makes getting in and out even easier.

But the most dog-friendly model is the Land Rover Defender, which is available with a "pet grooming and access package." It includes a ramp for the dog to climb into the trunk, a quilted trunk floor and a full-length partition. Plus, a “portable rinse system” is a shower head attached to a small water tank that can be used to wash dirt off a dog, shoes, and so on. If you purchased a used Defender without a package, you can buy it from a Land Rover dealer.

Which Land Rovers are hybrids?

Every new Land Rover and Range Rover model is available with a hybrid powertrain. From summer 2021, all models except Land Rover Discovery are available as plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). The Discovery hybrid plug-in is to be released but has not yet been launched. Plug-in hybrids combine a gasoline engine with an electric motor and have a range of about 30 miles on electricity alone. You can recognize them by the letter "e" in the model name - for example, the Range Rover PHEV engine is designated P400e.

During 2020 and 2021, all new Land Rover and Range Rover diesel models will receive a mild hybrid system that improves fuel efficiency and reduces carbon emissions.

Which Land Rover has the largest trunk?

For vehicles of their type, all Land Rover and Range Rover models have very large trunks. So either one is a good choice if you regularly do big shopping trips, tips or long vacations. But the Discovery has the most trunk space, with a huge capacity of 922 liters in five-seat mode (with the third-row seats folded down). Very few cars have more than this. Even with all the seats, there is enough space in the trunk to buy groceries for a week. Fold down all the rear seats and you have 2,400 liters of van-like space, enough for a mid-length sofa.

Do all Land Rovers have all-wheel drive?

Land Rover and Range Rover have always been known for their ability to go off-road almost anywhere. For decades they have been used to cross terrain that would stop most other vehicles. Modern Land Rover and Range Rover have the same capabilities. All-wheel drive is a key element in this ability, although some models do not have it.

The least powerful diesel models Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque badged eD4 or D150 are front-wheel drive only. But thanks to the high ground clearance and smart electronic systems that help keep the wheels from spinning, both are still quite capable of tackling off-road.

Which Land Rover is best for towing?

Land Rover and Range Rover are some of the best vehicles to tow and most models can tow at least 2000kg. Some versions of the Land Rover Discovery and Defender, as well as the Range Rover Sport and Range Rover, can tow 3500 kg, which is the maximum vehicle allowed to be towed.

Are there sports Land Rovers?

Most Land Rover and Range Rover models provide surprisingly fast acceleration when you hit the gas pedal hard. There are even some cars with incredibly powerful V8 engines that are very fast, but they don't seem particularly sporty. The exception is the Range Rover Sport SVR, which looks more like a sports car than a large SUV.
