Curbing the Electric Bike: What You Need to Know – Velobecane – Electric Bike

Unlocking an e-bike: what does it mean?

First of all, it is important to note that electric bycicle not like all ordinary bikes. There is a big difference between the two, especially in terms of their design and power.

Le electric bycicle it is a "technical" machine with an engine and auxiliary equipment. It is designed for a maximum speed of 25 km / h and no more. This power limit is not set by the motor, but by a flange, commonly referred to as the "manufacturer's flange", built into the heart of the motor. If you remove the bridle, then the bike is unrestrained.

Curb the electric bike therefore means removing the limiter to change the speed limit to 25 km / h. Unharness it also frees up engine power so the bike can benefit from a lot of power. In this way, the cyclist will be able to ride faster and enjoy his bike in excess of its original power.

Why build an electric bike?

Before answering this question, you must first ask yourself the question: “why buy electric bycicle ? “. The answers are certainly many, and they vary depending on the needs of each. If some see electric bycicle as a way to reduce pollution, others see it as a better alternative to cars and public transport.

Whatever the reason, the normal speed remains the same: 25 km / h.

This power is not enough for someone. This does not allow you to go faster and arrive at the appointment on time. This is why they prefer untie their electric bycicle

Curb the electric bike essential if you want to gain speed and power. Indeed, if the bike has a larger motor and battery, the runaway speed can go up to 50 km / h, enough to go faster to reach your destination in a few minutes.

Unlinking an e-bike: how does it work?

It is important to note that unclenching electric bycicle does not mean the destruction of the engine. In fact, it is about fixing an auxiliary device so that this engine can run normally.

Since the flange acts as a blockage limiting the power of the motor, it is sufficient to remove it to restore the original force.

To do this, the bike owner can choose one of two ways:

At the electronic controller level

The first unclamping process is performed at the electronic controller level. It consists in "tricking" this device by providing it with false data. The engine power then changes when the controller no longer receives accurate data. Thus, this method will free the engine and allow electric bycicle drive above 25 km / h.

Note that the speed recorded by the controller will no longer be accurate, but will remain at the target threshold.

Flange

The second method concerns the complete elimination of the flange. This means that the assist speed is reduced and the engine can deliver its full maximum power. The registered speed will go beyond 25 km / h and can reach 75 km / h.

Select the correct spreader for the type of bike motor.

All of these two methods above are effective, but you need to choose the one that suits your engine type. electric bycicle

Therefore, it is recommended that you know your motorization before proceeding with unclenching. Note that bicycles with crank motors and center motors are lighter untie... Examples include Yamaha, Panasonic, Bosch, Bafang, and Brose engines.

In addition, there are hub motors that are very difficult to match. untie, even impossible untie... For example, we have Go Swiss Drive, Xion motors, and our bike motors.

How to unlock the e-bike?

Given the many alternatives available in the market, it is very easy for many people to release electric bike. However, hacking is a delicate operation that requires knowledge and experience.

The presented unlocking methods are very simple at first glance, but in practice they can be difficult and complicated. A person less gifted in electronics may not unlock or even completely damage their bike.

Once you understand what is technically required, you need to make sure your bike can jerk. Then you select the unclamping method suitable for the engine.

In general, unlocking can be done with a tuning kit or without a kit (DIY method):

Using the expanding kit

Many mountain bikers prefer to use a special kit to facilitate unclamping. This device is more complex and practical to use. In general, it is offered in two different models: a bike mount kit and a kit that requires removal of the entire auxiliary system.

The choice of kit will depend on the brand of bike.

For Giant e-bikes, for example, they have a choice between the Ride Control kit and the Ride Control Evo. For Kalkhoff engines, they are more demanding and require special unrestrained kits.

But regardless of the model chosen, the principle of the expansion kit remains the same: "lure" the controller so that it believes that the bike is moving at normal speed, that is, at a speed of 25 km / h.

Unclenching the bike without using the kit

Curb the electric bike can also be produced without an expansion kit. So, you choose the DIY method.

To successfully unlock in DIY mode, you need to focus on the speed sensor. This role is to transfer data to the controller. However, this controller is the main element that regulates engine power.

To unleash this force and allow the bike to travel at over 25 km / h, you simply need to change the way the sensor communicates the bike's behavior to the controller. To do this, you can move the sensor components or disconnect the sensor cable.

What is the correct method to unlock the e-bike?

All of these methods are possible. But for beginners, admittedly, it is difficult to navigate.

To help you, you can choose kits that do not require disassembling the case. These devices fit most bicycle motors and are very easy to use.

On the other hand, other kits are also interesting, requiring the removal of the engine protection cover. Many mountain bikers turn to this device as it is very easy to use and takes about ten minutes to assemble.

In terms of performance, one or the other gives satisfactory results. The power received differs from engine to engine. It can reach 75 km / h for Yamaha motors, 50 km / h for Bosch and BionX motors and 45 km / h for Shimano, Panasonic, Brose, Canti….

Restraining the electric bike: what does the law say?

Some owners electric bycicle in a hurry untie their device. They don't know that this practice is completely prohibited by law.

In France, for example, a mountain biker who unlocks his bike is liable to imprisonment for up to one year with a fine of € 30.000. He risks confiscating his bike and losing his insurance in the event of an accident.

Meanwhile, the creators of the jailbreak kits are in danger of going to jail for two years.

A law passed in 2019 confirms that unlocking electric bycicle is considered a high risk offense and practice. These so-called "wild" bikes no longer provide safety when traveling at speeds over 25 km / h (normal speed for all VAE types). Anyone who rides a bicycle will be considered an illegal cyclist because he drives a car that does not meet current standards.

Unlocking an e-bike: what are the risks?

Curb the electric bike presents many risks and dangers to both the device and its owner.

Engine and battery life

Once unclenched, the life of the engine and battery will practically be reduced. A bicycle that travels at a higher speed in excess of 25 km / h requires the maximum power of these two elements. However, when asked for more strength, they are likely to tire quickly. They weren't programmed to do this.

Rapid deterioration after debridement

Apart from the motor and battery, most of the components electric bycicle can also be damaged quickly after being released. The chains, for example, are no longer strong enough to withstand this power above 25 km / h.

According to those accustomed to unbridled bikes, bike chains can fail in as little as 500 km of roads.

If you think about untie Your electric bycicle, consider replacing your chains with a new, stronger, more durable carbon unit.

Electric bike warranty

Rampant bike is no longer guaranteed! This means that your machine is no longer covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

Any modifications to the bike and changes to its original condition will void the warranty received at the time of purchase.

Without a guarantee, there will be no more insurance, especially if there is an arrest by the authorities or an accident on the road.

Withdrawal of approval

Like the warranty, homologation will also be canceled when the bike is unrestrained.

What is homologation?

Un electric bycicle riding at 25 km / h is considered an approved bike that can be ridden on all public roads.

When this bike undergoes modification, in particular at the level of motorization and assistance, it becomes an illegal device and therefore is not approved. Consequence: homologation canceled and traffic on public roads is prohibited.

From here, unrestrained bicycles can only travel on private roads or cycle paths laid out in fenced-off areas without approval.

Availability electric bycicle unbridled in a public environment is subject to bail, as we said above. It is possible, however, that this rampant bike will not be detected by the authorities because there is no clear indication that it was rampant.

Only speed cameras and a possible accident can detect this. And then the sanction will fall.

Great difficulty in resale

The unbridled bike regularly faces resale problems. For example, if you want to return your wild bike for sale at a specialist store, the latter will definitely not be able to accept it.

She just needs to check the motherboard to see all the changes made to the bike. Actions such as unlocking will be detected and the store will be forced to abandon the bike.

Therefore, it will be difficult for a bike owner to resell his bike because no website or store will allow an illegal bike to be returned.
