Which terminal to remove from the battery first and which one to put on first?

About how important an element in a car device is a battery, we have already talked many times on the pages of our portal for motorists Vodi.su. However, often in everyday life you can see how novice drivers and auto mechanics do not follow the sequence of removing the terminals and reconnecting them. How to remove and install the battery correctly: which terminal to remove first, which one to put on first, and why exactly? Let's try to deal with this problem.

Which terminal to remove from the battery first and which one to put on first?

Disconnecting and removing the battery

The battery, like any other part of a modern car, has its own service life. You will notice that something is wrong with the battery when it begins to quickly discharge, and the electrolyte inside begins to boil. In addition, in conditions where during the autumn-winter season the car is idle for a long time on the street, even experienced car mechanics will advise you to remove a new battery and temporarily store it in a warm place.

There may be other reasons for removing the battery:

  • replacement with a new one;
  • recharging;
  • removal of the battery for delivery to the store where they bought it, according to a complaint;
  • installation on another machine;
  • cleaning terminals and terminals from scale and deposits, due to which contact deteriorates.

Remove the terminals in the following sequence:

Remove the negative terminal first, then the positive.

A natural question arises: why such a sequence? Everything is very simple. The minus is connected to the mass, that is, to the metal case or metal parts of the engine compartment. From the plus there are wires to other elements of the vehicle's electrical network: a generator, a starter, an ignition distribution system and to other consumers of electric current.

Thus, if in the process of removing the battery, you first remove the “plus”, and then accidentally, when unscrewing the negative terminal, touch the metal open-end wrench to the engine case, which is connected to the “ground”, and at the same time to the positive terminal of the battery, you bridge the electrical network. There will be a short circuit with all the ensuing consequences: burning of wiring, failure of electrical equipment. A strong electric shock, even death, is also possible if you do not follow the safety rules when working with electrical equipment.

However, we immediately note that such a serious outcome if the sequence of removing the terminals is not observed is possible only in some cases:

  • you touched the metal parts under the hood and the positive terminal of the battery with the other end of the wrench, thereby shorting the circuit;
  • There are no fuses on the negative terminals on the car.

That is, the sequence of removing the terminals does not have to be like this - first “minus”, then “plus” - since if everything is done carefully, then nothing threatens you or the wiring with electrical equipment. Moreover, on most modern cars there are fuses that protect the battery from shorting.

Nevertheless, it is in this sequence that the terminals are removed at any service station, away from sin. Also, in any instructions, you can read that if it becomes necessary to carry out certain repairs, then to disconnect the battery, it is enough disconnect the terminal from the negative terminal of the battery. The positive electrode can be left connected.

In what order should the terminals be connected when installing the battery?

First remove the negative terminal, and only then the positive one in order to prevent a short circuit.

Connection takes place in the reverse order:

  • first we fasten the positive terminal;
  • then negative.

Recall that on the battery case near each output there are marks “plus” and “minus”. The positive electrode is usually red, the negative is blue. note that when installing the battery, it is impossible to change the order of connecting the terminals in any case. If the negative electrode is connected first, the risk of damage to the on-board network is very high.

Be sure to remember: you need to take off the minus first, and put on the first - plus.

Why is it necessary to first disconnect the "minus" and then the "plus" from the car's battery?
