Camping in Italy

Italy is an ideal country for caravanning lovers: many attractions, monuments, beautiful nature, breathtaking views and modern infrastructure adapted to the needs of campers and trailers. Where to go and which campsites to choose in Italy?

There are several thousand campsites in Italy where you can stay. Most of them are located in the northern and central parts of the country. Sicily and Sardinia offer many campsites close to beaches. The facilities are modern and tailored to the needs of tourists. If you are planning a holiday on the shores of the Adriatic, Tyrrhenian or Ionian Sea, you will not be disappointed, because there really is plenty to choose from.

Many campsites in Northern Italy and Tuscany are considered the most modern in Europe. They are adapted to the needs of people with disabilities and offer everything travelers need. In the south, the infrastructure is a little worse, but is still good enough to successfully plan a vacation.

Sicily is very popular in the summer season. Diving enthusiasts especially love Sardinia. In winter, tourists willingly choose campsites near the Alps and Dolomites, combining caravanning with winter sports, especially skiing. Some of the campsites are located at an altitude of over 1000 meters above sea level. In summer they are visited by caravanners looking for beautiful views or hiking on the nearby mountain trails.

Some Italian campsites do not allow pets. This often applies to objects located near monuments and the beach. Eco-friendly campsites that use and promote environmentally friendly solutions are becoming popular in Italy. You will find them all over the country, mainly on the coasts.

Italy is a beloved country for tourists, offering so many monuments and attractions that some people return many times. Italians boast the largest number of sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. We will find there, among other things: the buildings of Rome and Florence, Venice, Etna, Verona, Assisi, numerous cathedrals and basilicas, the archaeological area of Pompeii, the Dolomites and the rock paintings of Val Camonica.

Large concentrations of campsites are located near the Gulf of Venice, from where it is worth heading to nearby Padua. If you are looking for peace and closeness to nature, you will love the area around Lago di Garda and the Parco del Alto Garda Bresciano National Park.

Many campsites are located close to the borders of France, Switzerland and Austria. Traveling through the northern part of Italy is ideal for tourists who plan to visit several countries in one trip. The Republic of San Marino, an enclave in Italy, deserves special attention. It is worth coming here to see the La Rocca o Guaita fortress.

The area around the Bay of Naples deserves a recommendation. Naples itself is rich in numerous tourist attractions, including the historical center, castles and cathedrals. If you're planning to visit nearby Pompeii and Vesuvius, you can stay at Campeggio Spartacus or Camping Zeus, both located within the city, and travel to the volcano from there.

If you want to relax by the sea, you can choose from hundreds of properties on each sea front. Remember that Italy ranks fifth in the world for the number of tourists. During the holidays, coastal areas and popular lakes such as Garda and Como are crowded. It is best to book campsites in advance. The Zingaro nature reserve in Sicily and the Tuscan coast are also very popular.

Wild camping is illegal in Italy. Campers and trailers are checked, especially in the north of the country, near tourist attractions and on the coasts. Staying overnight outside the campsite may result in a fine of up to €500. The exception to the above rule is private property. Some owners agree to keep the vehicle.
