Error code P0017

Code P0017 sounds like "deviations in the signal of the crankshaft and camshaft position sensor (bank 1, sensor B)". Often in programs that work with an OBD-2 scanner, the name may have the English spelling "Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1, Sensor B)".

Technical description and interpretation of error P0017

This Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is a generic transmission code. P0017 is considered a generic code because it applies to all makes and models of vehicles. Although the specific repair steps may vary slightly depending on the model.

Error code P0017

The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor and camshaft position (CMP) sensor work together to control timing and spark/fuel delivery. Both consist of a reactive or tone ring that runs over a magnetic pickup. Which generates a voltage that indicates position.

The crankshaft sensor is part of the primary ignition system and acts as a "trigger". Determines the position of the crankshaft relay, which sends information to the PCM or the ignition module (depending on the vehicle). To control ignition timing.

The camshaft position sensor detects the position of the camshafts and sends information to the PCM. The PCM uses the CMP signal to determine the start of the injector sequence. These two shafts and their sensors are connected by a toothed belt or chain. The cam and crank must be synchronized exactly in time.

If the PCM detects that the crankshaft and cam signals are out of phase by a certain number of degrees, this DTC sets. Bank 1 is the side of the engine that contains the #1 cylinder. The "B" sensor will most likely be on the exhaust camshaft side.

Please note that on some models this error code can often be seen in combination with P0008, P0009, P0016, P0018 and P0019. If you have a GM vehicle and it has multiple DTCs. Refer to service bulletins that may apply to your engine.

Symptoms of a malfunction

The primary symptom of a P0017 code for the driver is the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp). It is also called Check Engine or simply "check is on".

They may also look like:

  1. The control lamp "Check engine" will light up on the control panel.
  2. The engine can run, but with reduced power (power drop).
  3. The engine may crank but not start.
  4. The car does not stop or start well.
  5. Jerks/misfires at idle or under load.
  6. Higher fuel consumption.

Causes of the error

Code P0017 may mean that one or more of the following problems have occurred:

  • Timing chain stretched or timing belt tooth slipped due to wear.
  • Timing belt/chain misalignment.
  • Slip / broken ring on the crankshaft / camshaft.
  • Faulty crankshaft or camshaft sensor.
  • The camshaft or crankshaft sensor circuit is open or damaged.
  • Damaged timing belt/chain tensioner.
  • Crankshaft balancer not properly tightened.
  • Loose or missing crankshaft ground bolt.
  • CMP actuator solenoid stuck open.
  • The CMP actuator is stuck in a position other than 0 degrees.
  • The problem is in the VVT system.
  • Damaged ECU.

How to troubleshoot or reset DTC P0017

Some suggested troubleshooting steps to fix error code P0017:

  1. Inspect the electrical wires and oil control solenoid valve connector. As well as camshaft and crankshaft position sensors.
  2. Check the level as well as the condition and viscosity of the engine oil.
  3. Read all stored data and error codes with an OBD-II scanner. To determine when and under what circumstances an error occurred.
  4. Clear the error codes from the ECM memory and check the vehicle to see if the P0017 code reappears.
  5. Command the oil control solenoid valve on and off. To find out if the valve timing is changing.
  6. If no problem is found, proceed with the diagnosis according to the vehicle manufacturer's procedure.

When diagnosing and correcting this error, you must follow the recommendations of the vehicle manufacturer. Failure to do so may result in severe engine damage and hasty replacement of defective components.

Diagnosis and problem solving

If your car is relatively new, the gearbox is covered by a warranty. Therefore, for repair, it is better to contact the dealer. For self-diagnosis, follow the recommendations below.

First, visually inspect the crankshaft and camshaft sensors and their harnesses for damage. If you notice broken or frayed wires, repair them and check again.

Check the location of the cam and crank. Remove the camshaft and crankshaft balancer, inspect the rings for unevenness. Make sure they are not loose, damaged or cut by the wrench that aligns them. If there are no problems, replace the sensor.

If the signal is OK, check the timing chain/belt alignment. When they are displaced, it is worth checking if the tensioner is damaged. Thus, the chain/belt may slip on one or more teeth. Also make sure the strap/chain is not stretched. Then fix and rescan for P0017.

If you need more specific information about your vehicle, please refer to the factory repair manual.
