A room for brothers and sisters - how to equip it and make it more practical to share?

Arranging a common room for siblings can be a real challenge. In this situation, each parent is looking for a simple solution that will compromise the interests of both children, satisfy their need for privacy and make sure that their living in the same room proceeds harmoniously, without quarrels. We advise what to do!

There are brothers and sisters who are very close, the same age. This is a comfortable situation for parents, because then it is not difficult to equip one room for both children due to similar interests and developmental stages. It is quite another thing when there is a difference in age between children. Usually rather quickly, seniors begin to feel the need for privacy and personal space. What to do in this case?

How to equip a room for brothers and sisters of different ages?

A large age difference between children poses a considerable problem for parents who equip a common room for them. Different interests, ways of spending free time, worldview and even bedtime - all these aspects can become a source of conflict in the future.

A small room may require a bunk bed. When choosing them, pay attention to the appropriate distance between the mattresses and the convenience of descending from above. The top floor should not be used by children under 4-5 years of age. Explain to them the possible consequences of an irresponsible descent or jump from the floor.

When planning a room, remember that younger siblings often like to imitate their elders. If a toddler and an elementary school student are to live together, remember that they both must have their own housing. Give the older person a place to study, preferably one that the younger child has limited access to. Give him, in turn, a small playground, for example. He can easily draw or flip through books. Do not forget to put in the room, in addition to the desk, a small table adapted to the size of the youngest child.

Room for siblings of the same age

In the case of kids or rebels who cannot compromise, sometimes the best solution is to unify the interior. Plain walls and simple furniture make a great base for decorating a room that changes as children age.

This decision creates a sense of justice because none of the children feel privileged. Simple, unified shelves, cabinets, nightstands, beds and desks are a brilliant starting point for the development of each child's books, figurines, stuffed animals and personal items, making each part of the room its own kingdom.

It is very important that students have separate desks, preferably with drawers. This will allow you to avoid conflict over time spent there, homework time, clutter left behind, or unsatisfied crayons. In a small area, it is the desk that can be a private area. Let your child choose accessories such as the desk organizer or the picture above. That's where crazy patterns and colors can reign supreme, even if your second child has very different tastes.

How to share a brother's or sister's room?

The division of the room can occur in different planes. Perhaps the most obvious decision, especially when it comes to siblings of different genders, is the color of the walls. You can let the kids choose their favorite colors (as long as they match even slightly). In addition to paints, you can also use personalized wallpaper for wall parts or wall stickers.

The room can also be divided in a less traditional way. Try using furniture settings that allow each child to have their own part of the room. In cases where siblings have a big age difference or just a big propensity to quarrel, a physical division of the room can be used.

The most common solution is to separate parts of the room with furniture that both children will have access to, such as a bookcase. An interesting solution is to also divide part of the room with a curtain. Depending on the size of the room and access to the window, you can choose a more transparent, regular or blackout curtain. The latter is worth paying attention to especially in the context of a situation where one of the children falls asleep earlier, and the other likes to read books or study late.

When deciding whether to share a room with brothers and sisters, take into account the difference in age and character of children, addictions, as well as temperament and complaisance. Depending on these aspects, you can divide the room symbolically or completely physically. However, remember that even the most harmonious siblings sometimes need a break from each other, so give each child at least a little personal space.
