Garden umbrella or awning - what to choose for protection from the sun?

Whether you want to provide yourself with blissful shade in hot weather or reliable shelter from unexpected rain, and you can't decide which is better to buy - an awning or a garden umbrella, learn about the main similarities and differences between them and the popular models available.

Garden umbrella or awning? What selection criteria to use?

The parasol and canopy are some of the most popular elements of garden architecture on the market, the task of which is to protect against adverse weather conditions when spending time outdoors. Both solutions have many supporters. Check out which one is best for your home!

Available free space that you can allocate

The awning will work best on balconies and terraces, saving space. Attaches to wall or roof rafters. If you want to fold the awning to take advantage of the sun's rays, the mechanism of the device allows you to do this. When buying a canopy, choose a model that only shades part of the terrace - so you have the choice of sunbathing or hiding in the shade. Observe how the light on the terrace works to decide which part of it needs to be permanently shaded, thus creating a seating area.

A garden umbrella is the best solution when you have more space and rely on mobile solutions. It can be easily moved to any place where it is most needed, it does not dominate the space and allows you to enjoy the sun and shade under a canopy. If you are going to purchase a certain model of umbrella, make sure that its legs, leg and base will not damage the floor. Unfortunately, it happens that over time, moving the umbrella around the terrace can destroy or scratch the boards, composite or tile.

Financial resources

When it comes to the financial costs that need to be incurred to provide sun protection on the terrace and balcony, an umbrella is definitely the cheaper solution. Prices for individual models start at around PLN 100, while more expensive umbrellas will cost around PLN 300-XNUMX.

Although the simplest model of a terrace awning can be purchased for as little as PLN 130, when choosing a variant equipped with an automatic winding system, you need to be prepared for an expense of about PLN 1500-3000.

Garden umbrella - what you need to know about it?

Umbrellas not only protect from the sun, but are also a decorative element of the terrace thanks to their colorful retractable canopy. When choosing a model for your terrace, in addition to color, look for products that allow you to choose the angle of inclination.

Some of the models available in our assortment are small and can also be mounted on the balcony. Special mechanisms help to open them, while a special lock prevents them from closing. Depending on the variant, they are equipped with a foot in the center, a side boom or a folded structure.

Small folding models, light and easy to assemble, are especially effective. Such umbrellas are usually mounted on plastic bases that are filled with sand or water. On the other hand, large umbrellas usually have a heavy concrete or granite base, making them difficult to carry.

What do you need to know about awnings?

Among the models available, the most popular are classic awnings that resemble awnings and so-called side awnings. You can also buy hanging options: hand-rolled and more expensive automatic roll-ups. The awnings can be hidden in three different ways: the material that rolls up on the tube can be completely open, partially closed (on top) or completely closed. An outdoor awning, although the cheapest, should only be installed under a roof, otherwise it will quickly fade and be exposed to bad weather. Fully covered sheds ensure greater durability of the equipment and the material from which it is made, but also the expense at the highest level.

Awnings and garden umbrellas – both solutions cannot be denied many advantages. Depending on what best suits your needs, invest in a model made from good quality materials (e.g. water and UV resistant polyester fabric) and equipped with extras - e.g. in the case of awnings, LED lights and a wind sensor responsible for the automatic winding of the device in strong winds.
