Having a child car seat in your car is a guarantee that your child will be safe throughout the trip. In Russia, a fine has been introduced for the lack of a child seat, and therefore drivers must equip their cars with them without fail.

Statistics only confirm that with the introduction of such a fine, the number of deaths and severe injuries of children has significantly decreased.

When a motorist who has children aged to 12 years, comes to the child car seat store, he wants to choose a model that meets all European safety standards. How to determine that in the event of an accident, this seat will really save your child from serious consequences?

First, you need to pay attention What age group is this seat for?: for babies up to 6 months and weighing up to 10 kg, group “0” is suitable, such a chair is installed in the back row of seats against the movement of the car, for the oldest children aged 6-12 years and weighing up to 36 kg, group III is needed. All these data, together with the Russian GOST compliance icon, are indicated on the packaging.

Secondly, the seat must comply with the European safety standard. ECE R44 / 03. The presence of the icon of this certificate indicates that:

  • the chair is made of materials that do not pose a risk to the health of the child;
  • it has passed all the necessary crash tests and can ensure the safety of the child in the event of an accident or emergency.

Crash tests of child car seats

Crash testing of child car seats is carried out by many European and American organizations and research institutes, and different methods of determining the degree of safety are used everywhere.

The European consumer trusts the results of the German club the most ADAC.

ADAC uses its own technique: the body of a five-door Volkswagen Golf IV is fixed on a moving platform and simulates frontal and side collisions with an obstacle. A mannequin equipped with various sensors sits in the holding device, and shooting is also carried out from different angles for later viewing in slow motion.

Chairs are judged on the basis of:

  • protection - how well the seat will protect the child from hitting the front seats, doors or roof in a collision;
  • reliability - how securely the seat holds the child and is attached to the seat;
  • comfort - how comfortable the child feels;
  • use - whether it is convenient to use this chair.

A very important point is to determine the chemical composition of the materials from which the child restraint is made.

Based on the test results, detailed tables are compiled, the most reliable models are marked with two pluses, the most unreliable - with a dash. For clarity, color schemes are used:

  • bright green - excellent;
  • dark green - good;
  • yellow - satisfactory;
  • orange - acceptable;
  • red is bad.

American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety - IIHS — also conducts similar tests, in which child restraints are tested on a number of parameters: reliability, environmental friendliness, comfort.

The tests are carried out with dummies corresponding to the parameters of children of approximately 6 years of age. The position of the seat belts in collisions is analyzed, ideally the belt should be on the shoulder or collarbone of the child.

Each year, the IIHS publishes the results of the tests it has carried out, on which safety ratings are compiled. Tests are carried out on the most popular child restraint models.

Crash tests from EuroNCAP are the most stringent.

The European organization tests the safety of cars with recommended seat models installed in them.

It is EuroNCAP proposed to use the ISO-FIX fastening system everywhereas the most reliable. The organization does not compile separate ratings for car seats, but here they analyze how this or that car model is adapted for transporting children.

Crash tests are also carried out by reputable publications, one of which is the German magazine Stiftung Warentest.

The main task is an independent assessment of goods and services. The seat test is carried out in cooperation with ADAC and according to the same methods. Child restraints are evaluated on a number of grounds: reliability, use, comfort. As a result, detailed tables are compiled, in which the best models are marked with two pluses.
