Short test: Audi A5 Sportback 2.0 TDI (130 kW) Business

Look at him, Mr. Sportback. On the outside, all he wants from a sportsman is red paint and maybe red brake calipers, and without a second thought, they would stick an S badge on the tailgate, even with a diffuser, even with an RS. Coupe lines (despite the five doors), 19-inch wheels, a short distance from the ground… Parked or driving, the A5 Sportback is a handsome car that turns heads despite its dull color.

What is his heart? Let's face it, 177 turbo-diesel horses isn't what looks predict. The sport leaves the driver with huge wheels and a sports chassis (both from the accessory list) that provides a secure road position and a pretty solid set of bumps, but it's still more than an athlete, a great business car: comfortable enough, attractive and unassuming.

Since there is a well-known two-liter turbodiesel in the nose, the owner's saliva drips precisely because of the saving of the entire package. When cruise control is set to 130 kilometers per hour, the engine hums at a pleasant 2.200 rpm and consumes about six liters per hundred kilometers. Also, the calculated test average is not much higher, which is a good indicator for such a large car and for the owner's wallet.

When you come to terms with the fact that the performance is only solid (and not racing), it is very pleasant to live with such a motorized Audi. Most impressive are the performance of the six-speed manual transmission and its consistency with the engine: medium-length movements are precise, gear changes are clearly visible, and the response of the entire drive when shifting is elegant, without squeaking. Although these and similar cars have already spoiled us with excellent automatic transmissions, there is nothing to complain about with this manual. Also commendable is the cruise control, which is not disturbed (not turned off) when shifting gears. This is useful when accelerating from a toll booth, where you can use the previously set 130 kilometers per hour in third gear, and in between, simply select the correct gears without touching the accelerator pedal.

Slightly less impressive, especially if you get into it from a minivan, transparency. Because it sits quite low and because of the bulging outer lines we can't see the outer edges of the body, the A5 (or its driver) doesn't maneuver very well in the garage. It's just a tax on the exterior shape and position of the coupe behind the wheel, and it's a good thing they've also included reverse parking assist in the Business Sport package.

The feel of all four seats (only the fifth in the center is larger) is top notch in terms of spaciousness, shape and quality of the components surrounding the driver and passengers. Seats, armrests, switches, audio system, three headlights in the trunk (one on each side and one on the door), a clear multimedia interface ... No comment. The only caveat is that a car equipped in this way costs over ten thousand and still lacks radar cruise control or a lane departure warning system.
