Short test: Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCi (70 kW) ECOnetic (5 doors)

The slightly clichéd mindset is rooted in Ford's push to make the Fiesta a more environmentally friendly car. So the Fiesta Econetic could also be green.

If you ignore the beautiful lettering on the back, you will hardly find yourself standing in front of the most fuel efficient Fiesta. Very keen observers may notice lower headroom, which of course contributes to less air resistance, and in the summer also 14-inch tires with lower rolling resistance. Since we tested the Fiesta in the winter, the stiffer tires contributed to greater safety on snow and ice, while at the same time requiring some tax on fuel consumption.

But connoisseurs will know that the essence is hidden from view. The classic 1,6-liter turbo diesel engine with Common Rail technology has to accommodate recycled electronics and rely on a higher viscosity oil for lubrication. Unfortunately, the transmission is only five-speed, but it has been assigned longer gear ratios. First impression? Fifth gear is still too short at high highway speeds, so sixth gear will also do the Econetico Fiesta.

Interestingly, the Fiesta doesn't get completely anemic even after the changes are made, so at the wheel it still rewards the driver with the sporty touch that's so characteristic of Ford. The more demanding driver does not need much time: a neat and sociable steering wheel, not too soft chassis and reliable brakes. All this the white Fiesta has to offer. Powerful engine? Ah, that's the last requirement, and the 70kW Fiesta Econetic is good enough despite the longer gear ratios. The turbo breathes at 1.500 rpm, and at 2.500 rpm, according to Ford's instructions, you'll have to switch if you really want to take advantage of this technology and use as little fuel as possible.

Well, at Avto we didn't follow instructions like drunks, so given the winter tires and mostly city driving, we were happy to find that the average test was six liters, and the trip computer even boasted 5,5 liters. You only need to be in time with the gearbox; if you miss a downshift (to lower gears) and get trapped in low revs (less than 1.500), you will immediately notice that the 1,6-liter diesel is more than helpless without the help of forced refueling. The chill was a little loud too, but otherwise he was a good companion. We got even more pissed off at the starts, as the combination of a sensitive clutch, not very accurate throttle and a sleepy engine at basement speeds worked. Maybe it's just that the clutch and accelerator pedals are poorly synchronized?

Inside, the combination of red-brown and black interior (the exact opposite of the neutral exterior color) immediately strikes the eye, which adds freshness and technology to an already dynamic form. It is thanks to the new technology that the buttons on the center console look like a large mobile phone. Ah, Fords, the solution is still not the best, let alone poor transparency. However, we would like to praise the rich equipment in one go, because very quickly you get used to ESP, hands-free communication and, above all, to heated windshield. Hell, if Ford offered daytime running lights, it probably wouldn't hurt, would it?

We appreciate the Fiesta Econetic because it still retains the youthful dynamism that it rightfully boasts in a crowd of cleaner cars. Only now it is more economical.

evaluation

  • A cold winter may not be the best time for fuel economy records, but six liters per 100 kilometers is a good prospect to easily climb up to five in the summer. Hey Ford, how about a super test?
