Short test: Ford Mondeo 1.5 EcoBoost (118 kW) Titanium (5 gates)

At Ford, the reduction in engine displacement was taken seriously and interestingly. The two-liter engines remain either diesel or in a hybrid version, which proved to be very economical in our tests, or in the most powerful turbocharged petrol versions with up to 240 "horsepower". If we talk about moderately powerful gasoline, that is, a brand new 1,5-liter 160-horsepower EcoBoost, later it will be possible to choose a liter with 125 "horsepower". Less volume means less flow, right? Not always. Some of them depend on the design characteristics of the manufacturer, some on how the engine matches the shape and weight of the car, some, of course, also on the driving style. And with the Mondeo, the combination does not deliver extremely low fuel consumption, but is still lower than it used to be.

If we forget the engine size and look at consumption in terms of performance, in general: a gasoline engine with 160 horsepower with plenty of torque and almost one and a half tons of empty weight on our standard lap was satisfied with 6,9 liters. gasoline for hundreds of kilometers. Of course, this is more than competitors' and own-produced diesel engines can do, but nothing more. And among gasoline, such a Mondeo is one of the most economical. So there's nothing wrong with mileage if you're one of those who appreciate the refinement (and two-thousandths lower price) of gasoline than the absolute lower mileage of diesel. The Titanium label stands for the best of the two levels of hardware available. It has just about everything a driver needs, including a smart key, an LCD touchscreen to control vehicle functions, heated front seats and a windshield, a steering wheel (which came in handy on a cold morning), and a color display between the meters.

The latter, unlike the Trend package, cannot display speed, and since the analog speedometer is of a more opaque type (because it is completely linear and the speed intervals are small), it is difficult to accelerate quickly, especially at city speeds. It is difficult to distinguish at what speed the car is moving - an error of five kilometers per hour in zone 30 can be costly for us. Except for this error, the system works fine, and the same can be said about the rest of the Sync2 infotainment system, which we wrote about in detail in one of the previous issues of Auto magazine. The Mondeo is no small car, so of course it's not surprising that the interior is very spacious. Both front and rear sit comfortably and well (in front also because of the better seats that belong to this equipment), the trunk is huge, and visibility does not suffer - only the dimensions of the car, which is almost 4,9 meters. long, you just need to get used to it. Ford's latest generation intelligent parking system, which can not only park and park the car itself, but also pay attention to cross traffic when leaving the parking space, is a great help when parking.

Interestingly, the Active City Stop security system is not included in the list of standard equipment (for which the Mondeo deserves criticism), but you need to pay a little less than five thousand for it. In addition to this safety system, the test Mondeo also had rear seat belts with an integrated airbag, which is a good solution on paper but also has practical drawbacks. The buckle is much more massive and less convenient for fastening (including because the chest and stomach have their own winding mechanism, while the buckle is fixed in the meantime), which is especially noticeable when children sitting in a child car seat try on a fastened seat. their own - and the belt itself is unsuitable for attaching such seats because of the pillow.

You will need ISOFIX seats. The active LED headlights included with the optional Titanium X package do the job well, but with one drawback: like some other headlights (such as headlights with LED light and a lens in front of it), they have a pronounced blue-violet edge at the top. an edge that can disturb the driver at night because it causes blue reflections from smooth illuminated surfaces. It's best to take an overnight test drive before buying - if that bothers you, discard them or we might recommend them. Thus, such a Mondeo turns out to be a good large family or business car. It's big enough that the rear bench is actually useful for larger passengers, it's equipped enough to keep the rider from tripping over other extra equipment, and at the same time, if you take into account the regular discount campaign, it's also comfortable. affordable - 29 thousand for such a car at a reasonable price.

evaluation

  • Otherwise, this new Mondeo suffers from a few minor flaws that won't bother some drivers anyway. If you are among them, then this is a great choice.
