Short test: Škoda Yeti Outdoor 2.0 TDI 4 × 4 Ambition

Czech Škoda is going through exciting and, above all, interesting times. In the last year or two alone, they have refurbished most of their models and added new models to them. As such, they can easily implement their sales strategy, the desire to sell, which is expected to be 2018 million cars sold in XNUMX. Of this number, sales in China or Asia will account for a significant part, and European figures are not (and certainly will not be) insignificant. They are also getting higher and higher in Europe.

Even much more than in Slovenia, which still shows that Slovenes are spoiled and do not believe. While almost every German already knows that the German Volkswagen follows Škoda and that many of the components are nearly identical, Slovenes are still worried about the Škoda badge and the fact that it is a Czech car. Well, everyone has a right to their faith, and that's right or good; otherwise, people would no longer buy expensive (more expensive) cars, but when they were already cheaper, offer them everything they need. The shape of the car is of course not taken into account.

And if I go on, it would be difficult to say that the Yeti convinces because it is handsome, although Škoda claims to be one of the most attractive compact SUVs in the world and has more than exceeded their expectations since its premiere. many years ago. More logically, the Yeti is different enough to be interesting. Well, after the last renovation, there are quite a few who claim that the Yeti was more attractive before the renovation, mainly because of the different round lights. But cars of all brands are subject to an internal strategy, so they must disclose from a distance which brand the car belongs to.

This is why the Yeti rework was based primarily on the new nose of the car. New are the mask, the bumper and of course the headlights. Now, like most cars, they are combined into just two headlights, and the Yeti can also be equipped with bi-xenon headlights for an additional fee.

The word Outdoor was written next to the name of the test car, which means that it differs from the basic, more elegant version in various elements of the front and rear of the car, including the bumper, chassis protection, side rails and door sills. made of black, more durable plastic.

There are no major changes inside the Yeti, but he did not need them either. In it, the driver and passengers feel good without problems and unnecessary adjustments. The driving position is good, the steering wheel is adjustable longitudinally and laterally, the switches are where the driver needs them. Even rear-seat passengers have no seating issues, and the movable (and adjustable backrests) rear seats are a great help.

In practice, this means moving forward when we need space in the trunk, and moving the seats back when we need space for rear passengers.

The Yeti under test had a well-known two-liter turbodiesel engine under the hood, which, in combination with all-wheel drive, offers just 110 horsepower. Although the Volkswagen Group has been spoiling us with more power lately, it's still hard to say that 110 is not much or even too little. For a completely normal and decent ride, there is more than enough power, because compact SUVs are not designed for racing. But make no mistake, the Yeti is not afraid of speeding, it behaves quite reliably even when driving fast on a twisty road.

Depending on the height of the car, the body tilts much less than some of its competitors, and the driver's feel and control are more than good. This is due to the good and efficient chassis and, of course, the all-wheel drive (Haldex). During dynamic driving, the engine is clearly more stressed, which is also reflected or mainly in fuel consumption. This may not be the smallest figure in our test, but the Yeti's defense is certainly supported by the fact that the turbo diesel engine lagged behind it by only 500 kilometers. So he was still new and unfamiliar.

Otherwise, the Yeti will not disappoint with either the equipment or the gear. The car is mostly above average, and the Ambition equipment includes special 16-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, leather-wrapped steering wheel, gear lever and handbrake lever, multi-function three-spoke steering wheel, rear parking sensors. ■ storage space under the driver's seat, cruise control and driver's knee airbags.

Overall, the Yeti would be hard to blame for anything. It is worth telling the unbelieving Tomaž again that the influence of the German Volkswagen is more than obvious, but unobtrusive and in a different way. And Škoda should be congratulated for this.

evaluation

  • Škoda Yeti is a completely correct and worthy car that can impress many. Slovenians are still worried about the badge, but I would put it this way: since I am not enthusiastic about this class of car, I would never choose or buy one myself. But if I bought it for, say, a company car, I would be happy without any hesitation.
