Short test: Opel Antara 2.2 CDTi AWD Cosmo

A similar compromise with Antara: it has four-wheel drive, but it has too little protective plastic and tires that didn't show up even in our test braking, so you have to be very careful. So: what kind of rubble on the mentioned hills you will already overcome, but do not push into the mud and high snow, otherwise you may have to push a two-ton steel horse into your arms, which is not the most pleasant experience. But it's great.

Antari have known each other for many years, she is almost eight years old. The free and almost accessible Wikipedia says that it was updated in terms of design in 2010 and received a 2,2-liter turbodiesel a year later. The installation of the screen for navigation and radio control is most indicative, since due to the larger display of the trip computer (with desperate graphics), it had to move to the middle of the dashboard, that is, away from eyes. Honestly, even the size of this extra screen didn't make much of an impression, but it is touch sensitive (although you can also control it with a button) and with inappropriately better graphics.

Before moving on to the rich equipment, even from the list of additional ones, let's understand the technique. The Antara being tested was powered by a 2,2-liter turbo diesel four-cylinder engine that develops an enviable 135 kilowatts on paper, or more than the domestic 184 "horsepower". Throw in a six-speed manual transmission and the combination sounds great, but with some comments. The gear ratios in the lowest gears allow for towing a trailer or a fully loaded car, and the drivetrain is stiff or fancy, so the driver soon begins to avoid frequent gear changes and prefers to rely on a more comfortable ride in higher gears using torque.

The chassis evokes the same mixed feeling: it satisfies its primary function of suspension and damping, but probably also due to the 19-inch wheels, it is not as comfortable as one would like it to be for a family car. In short, the Antara externally acts like a midsize “soft” SUV, and you will feel as if you are sitting in a more massive instance behind the wheel. So I find it easy for SUV enthusiasts to fall in love with this car, especially if the wife won't let her buy more uncomfortable and off-road specs.

As we have already hinted, Antara was very richly furnished. So don't look at the price first, or you'll probably keep flipping through the magazine. The fact is that a relatively large part of this figure can be attributed to additional equipment, which is not necessarily necessary. If you ditch the leather seats (which the kids already didn't like because they complained about the cold seat cover on a cold morning, as opposed to the front passengers who pampered us with additional heated buttocks and back), you can save 2.290 euros without a roof window with electric drive, additional 730 euros.

However, we highly recommend the other three items on the fun list. The first is the €1.030 Cosmo package, which includes heated and adjustable rear-view mirrors, nice bi-xenon headlights, a high-pressure headlamp washer system, the aforementioned 19-inch alloy wheels and a tire pressure monitoring system. the Touch & Connect navigation system with touch screen and hands-free system (820 euros), and finally the FlexFix two-wheel holder that can be hidden in the rear bumper (980 euros).

Some (senior) drivers will love the high driving position, but we were a little worried about the lack of storage space. Even those around the driver are modestly dosed. Fuel consumption ranges from seven liters (standard range) to 8,8 liters per 100 kilometers. On the part of the route, when we were driving mostly quietly on the highway, a very accurate indicator of the average consumption showed 8,1 liters, which is a good success for such a large, heavy and four-wheel drive vehicle. The trunk is basically 475 liters, and when the rear seat is folded down (one third: two thirds) we even get 1.575 liters and a flat bottom.

Are you saying that you are not interested in Schmarna Gora (or any other previously mentioned hill)? What can you say about the trip to Toshka Chelo and the continuation of the bike ride to Katarina?

evaluation

  • What to expect from the most powerful and equipped Antara? Lots of equipment (although some are optional), roominess and flexibility, although they are already familiar with this squishy Opel SUV of the year (navigation screen layout, comfort…).
