Short test: Opel Insignia Sports Tourer 2.0 CDTi Biturbo Cosmo

A few years ago, in a car of this class, almost 200 "horses" could be called sports. Of course, if it were gas stations. But in this case it is a biturbo diesel and despite 400 Nm of torque, such an Insignia is far from what its sister with the OPC label offers, for example. She deserves to be an athlete. And this one? This is the best Insignia for those who are not looking for absolute sportiness, but sophistication. The engine here is excellent, starting at XNUMXrpm – and while we wrote a year and a half ago that we might need a little more responsiveness below that number, we don't need it this time.

Not because the engine was changed, but because of the automatic transmission. True, it helps that the torque does not come in a jerk, but gradually increases, but still, it is the automatic transmission that gives the Insignia that part of refinement and persuasiveness that the manual transmission version lacks. In addition, the sound insulation is quite good, and the consumption in the end, despite the automation, is still favorably low - in the test it stopped at an average of just under eight liters, which is the same as a year ago. What about the normal range?

Given the capacity and weight of the car, 6,4 liters is a good result. The chassis could be a little softer (or the tires could have a slightly larger cross-section) as too many bumps (especially short and sharp ones) from the road penetrate the passengers. But that's just the price to pay for the car's sporty looks and slightly better road position, as well as good enough steering wheel feel for what's going on with the front wheels. The Sports Tourer means a lot of space in a nicely designed trunk (minus: the bi-thirds rear bench is split so that the smaller part is on the right, which is unfavorable for the use of a child seat), a lot of space in the rear bench and of course comfort in the front. And since the test Insignia had the Cosmo designation, that also means they didn't skimp on the hardware.

If we add an extra eight thousand surcharges to that, including great bi-xenon headlights and partially digital gauges, navigation, leather upholstery, and electric tailgate opening (it happens slowly and doesn't stop if the door is hit), it's clear that for a good 36 thousand (this is the price of such an equipped Insignia with an official discount) is not a bad deal. But not as good as we would have written a year ago, because the competition does not depend on equipment (especially assistance systems) or price.

evaluation

  • This Insignia will be bought by those who know what they want: a sportier look, more sporty performance, but at the same time the ease of use in a station wagon, the economy and comfort of a diesel engine. If I had four-wheel drive for this money ...

We praise and reproach

capacity

driving position

fuel consumption

a little too stiff suspension

the gearbox is not an example of precision and sophistication

slow electric opening of the trunk, which does not stop when hitting an obstacle
