Short test: Renault Twingo SCe 70 Dynamic

It was special, quirky, and so inconsistent in design that we just loved it. Unlike fast-paced cars, its appeal has lasted and turned into a love over the years, especially when it came time for a new generation. The Twingo is one of those truly rare cars whose successor has been completely overlooked both in terms of design and in almost every other way. Now Renault is trying to fix the lost reputation. It is probably clear to everyone that this is difficult. Especially in our time, when the choice of cars is really diverse and it is difficult to offer something special. But every attempt counts, and here it remains only to bow to Renault.

We have already written about the third generation Twingo, so we will not repeat what it looks like in terms of design and interior. We already know it's rear-engine, not least from our first test. But at that time the engine was a little more powerful, exactly 20 "horsepower", and it was assisted by a turbocharger. In this test, there was no such help, but the engine is larger in volume, but only slightly, and it is still only a three-cylinder. For such engines, we know in advance that their behavior, and especially advertising, differs from the usual four-cylinder, but this disadvantage is supposed to be hidden by low costs (both for production and maintenance) and even low consumption.

We criticized the latter with a more powerful engine, and this time we cannot praise either. The Twingo claimed 5,6 liters at 7,7 kilometers on a standard lap, and the average test was a whopping XNUMX liters per hundred kilometers. Thus, the engine was the main culprit for the bad mood, because otherwise the person feels good in a beginner. Of course, there is no spatial luxury, but the Twingo impresses with its agility, incredibly modest turning radius, and also disappointment.

Especially with a car-sized radio. Well, not small, but its dynamics are so weak that at the permitted highway speed (which is only slightly below the maximum for the Twingo, which again causes a slight discontent) it is difficult to suppress loud operation or advertising of the engine with music. Unfortunately, Renault still believes that if the car is small, then it does not need a good radio. Well, I knew this first-hand for a very long time, at least a good 18 years, when I built a great radio, amplifier and speakers into the first Twingo. And I remember with nostalgia the tarpaulin roof and countless moments of pleasure. He was a real Twingo, although the new one will still be difficult to come up with.

evaluation

  • Let's hope Renault manages to repeat the Slovenian proverb that it likes to go third. The first generation was great, the second was lacking, gloomy and on average losing. The third is different enough that it has a good chance of success from the start, with a few minor fixes it will be guaranteed. Twingo, keep our fists.
