Brief test: Smart forfour (52 kW), edition 1

When everything was so simple and the list was always so short, it was a quick check mark. But the four reasons we just listed are hard arguments, and there aren't many of them, namely cars that can boast of them. Even closer, of course, is the Renault Twingo, a close relative of Smart and the result of a collaboration between two strong players in the automotive market, namely Renault and Mercedes. If we write that the Smart Forfour is exactly the same car as the Renault Twingo, we will be rude, what rudeness, arrogance!

Overly simplistic, and no, they didn't just replace the badge on the nose. From a technical point of view, of course, the two cars are the same, but from a design point of view, each goes its own way. The smart we tested attracted attention with its bold color combination that cleverly flows outside and into the interior. There you will be greeted by a somewhat unusual, but very beautifully designed car interior with many small spaces and shelves for storing small items. Something that women will surely love, and if we're not too vain, so will men. Everyone gets a box for a can of soft drinks or a wallet.

The phone is well placed in a very comfortable and nice holder that can be rotated, and you can follow what is happening on the smartphone screen in a horizontal or vertical position. We think this add-on is great for using your phone as a navigator when driving around the city or looking for unexplored corners in the immediate or distant surroundings. Hands-free calls were handled through the multimedia interface. It is so spacious: there is not much of it, but considering that it is a very small car, it is surprisingly large. If you measure a height of 180 centimeters, you will sit well enough in him to be able to go even further. The story is a little different: children will ride comfortably, adults and large passengers, unfortunately, will not.

It is very interesting to read in the dark Smart with rear seats (readyspace), as they fold quickly and create a lot of space for luggage. Smart offers three different engines: 61, 71 and 90 horsepower. We drove on 52 kilowatts or 71 "horses". Of course, a three-cylinder petrol engine is not something you could put in the back of a car to break speed records and catch acceleration, and that's familiar to the car when you're driving from downtown to the ring road. or even the highway. He begins to lack power when the speed exceeds a hundred kilometers per hour. This is also evidenced by the results of the measurement of flexibility and acceleration. But if you're planning to drive the Smart on the highway or often go on long trips, then we strongly recommend that you consider at least a more powerful engine or a different machine. The Smart Forfour simply wasn't designed and built for such feats. Don't get me wrong, the car can certainly be handled quite well, the fuel tank can go just under 500 kilometers and the consumption isn't excessive.

But when he leaves the city, he is familiar with the light construction, as he is sensitive to both frontal and side winds. However, this highway ride is also a little different and reminds us that sacrifices also require sacrifices. But if we can say that Smart is not for highways, then its image in the city is completely opposite. The car reigns in it! Its turning radius is ridiculously small, making it really easy to drive around corners on the streets or zigzag between larger cars and various obstacles on the road. It is very easy to turn the steering wheel and will not tire even the most delicate female hands. It boasts rear-wheel drive, as the steering wheel works differently than front-wheel drive vehicles. We were also impressed by the visibility from the car in the city. When reversing and when looking to the side, everything that is happening around is very clearly visible. Shifting with the gear lever is precise enough to provide fast acceleration.

However, in order to accelerate effectively and follow driving dynamics, the three-cylinder engine needs to be handled more decisively at higher revs. We believe this is one of the main reasons for significant gasoline cravings. Fuel consumption is surprisingly high in terms of vehicle weight and dimensions. On a standard lap, we measured as much as 6,2 liters of consumption. However, it was slightly higher in the overall test. We measured the consumption of 7,7 liters per hundred kilometers. The basic version with this engine costs 12 and a half thousand, and well-equipped 16 and a half. If we consider the price per kilogram or cubic meter of a car, then this is of course a high price, but then you are not quite the buyer of such a Smart. Because Smart is more than just a car, it's a fashion accessory, you want to tell the world something about it and, of course, you love it. Just by choosing a color, make sure that the purse, shoes and earrings match perfectly with each other.

evaluation

  • We buy a car rationally and irrationally. Buying a Smart is always associated with the latter, emotions, enthusiasm and the likability of a car as an idea. This Smart is for everyone who wants to get away from everyday life and are looking for a car with character that is as small and agile as possible, yet can carry a driver and three passengers.
