Therefore, every motorist should know how to replace the driveshaft cross, and how to properly monitor it so as not to get into a very unpleasant situation, especially when it comes to an unforeseen breakdown while traveling. The very first forerunner of the breakage of the crosspieces is the characteristic knock that occurs while driving in the cardan box. In addition, you can also hear the creak, rattle and even crackle. Remember that the repair of the driveshaft crosspiece cannot be postponed until later, since even a small malfunction of it will affect the quality of the trip and the operation of the entire mechanism, which means it can cause an accident.
The main reason for such a malfunction, as a rule, is the gap in the universal joint, as well as the wear of the bearings of the crosspiece itself.
Of course, both the driving style and the quality of the road surface affect their serviceability, but if the first completely depends on the driver, then we cannot influence the second factor. Cross-country trips, which cause heavy loads, are especially negatively reflected. In addition, the location of the cross is not the most favorable (very close to the road surface), so dust, dirt and water constantly affect it.
Removing the drive shaft cross - check its condition visually
In order to extend the life of the crosspiece and, of course, the cardan itself as long as possible, it is necessary to regularly carry out visual control, with which you can assess its serviceability. Also, high-quality grease for the driveshaft crosspieces does not hurt, especially since it is not difficult to acquire it. Moreover, it is recommended to lubricate its elements at least every ten thousand kilometers.
You can carry out diagnostics as follows: with one hand we take the flange, and with the other - the shaft, and rotate them in different directions. If a backlash is formed, then this indicates a strong wear of the part, and hence the need for urgent repair or its complete replacement. In order to understand whether it is possible to confine ourselves to only replacing worn-out elements, a complete removal of the driveshaft cross will be required.
This is done according to the following scheme. First, unscrew the fastening bolts of the cardan, and then it can be easily dismantled. Next, the nuts are unscrewed, with the help of which the shaft is attached to the rear axle shank. With the help of pliers, you need to unclench the retaining ring and dismantle the crosspiece itself. Then rotate the shaft so that it hangs and knock out its cups with a hammer. Now remove them, taking into account the dimensions of the propeller shaft cross, it is not difficult to do this.
How to replace the universal joint shaft - will you have enough strength?
Basically, this part cannot be restored, but needs to be completely replaced. Below are instructions on how to install a new spider. The first step is to remove both cups, install it in the lugs, and then carefully, so that the needles do not fall apart, put the cups in their original places. Next, we squeeze them and put on the retaining ring, and then we install the shaft in place. So that this stage does not cause difficulties and is carried out very quickly, it is better to put marks when removing the gimbal.
Also, before installing a new cross, clean the traces of rust from the universal joint lugs and the groove for the circlip. Of course, if you are not confident in your abilities, and you are experiencing a shortage of time, then it is better to replace the universal joint shaft at the station. But, in general, there is no difficulty in changing it on your own.
