Visual Capitalist has compiled a list of the largest manufacturers of lithium-ion cells in the world. These are only companies from the Far East: China, South Korea and Japan. Europe is not on the list at all, the US emerged thanks to Tesla's control of Panasonic.

Worldwide lithium-ion cell production

Data refer to 2021. Visual Capitalist calculated that today the lithium-ion cell segment is worth 27 billion US dollars (equivalent to 106 billion PLN) and recalled that in 2027 it should be 127 billion US dollars (499 billion PLN). The top three on the list - CATL, LG Energy Solution and Panasonic - control 70 percent of the market:

  1. CATL - 32,5 percent,
  2. LG Energy Solution – 21,5 percent,
  3. Panasonic – 14,7 percent,
  4. BYD – 6,9 percent,
  5. Samsung SDI – 5,4 percent,
  6. SK Innovation – 5,1 percent,
  7. CALB – 2,7 percent,
  8. AESC – 2 percent,
  9. Goxuan - 2 percent,
  10. HDPE - 1,3 percent,
  11. Inside - 6,1 percent.

CATL (China) supplies parts for Chinese cars, has signed a contract with Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and in the western hemisphere it serves or will support BMW, Renault, the former PSA group (Peugeot, Citroen, Opel), Tesla, Volkswagen and Volvo. The manufacturer's versatility is said to be the result of significant funding from the Chinese government and flexibility in the fight for contracts.

LG Energy Solution (formerly: LG Chem; South Korea) is working with General Motors, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Jaguar, Audi, Porsche, Ford, Renault and Tesla on Models 3 and Model Y made in China. Thirdly Panasonic it is almost exclusively Tesla and has started partnerships with several other brands (Toyota, for example).

BYD is present in BYD cars, but rumors regularly circulate that it may appear in other manufacturers as well. The market share between lithium iron phosphate and nickel cobalt (NCA, NCM) cells is approximately 4: 6, with LFP cells just starting to spread in passenger cars outside of China.
