Lamborghini Urus helps brand double sales in 2019

The Lamborghini SUV was a great success.

It's somewhat unsurprising that Lamborghini, inspired by the new "super SUV" Urus, increased its sales by 96% in the first half of 2019.

Urus topped Raging Bull's sales list, selling a whopping 2693 units out of 4553 vehicles sold by the brand in six months worldwide.

The brand also managed to sell 1211 Huracans and 649 of the aging V12 Aventador.

Urus helped the Italian supercar maker counter a general downward trend in car sales worldwide, with a 128% increase in the US. Lamborghini sold 94 units in Australia, up 44.6% year-to-date, and 49 of those units were SUVs, according to VFACTS, although the Audi Q8, with which it shares its VW Group MLB Evo platform, managed to move. 211 units over the same time period.

The $390,000 Urus is billed as "the world's fastest SUV" and is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine producing 478kW/850Nm. It is claimed to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, which equates to a top speed of 305 km/h.

Lamborghini pins continued selling the Aventador in its wild SVJ variant introduced last year, despite being limited to 900 units. The SVJ doesn't have an official price in Australia, although the only other variant sold here - the S - costs $789,809, which almost makes the Urus a bargain.

While details are scarce, the Urus could compete when Ferrari releases its own super SUV, dubbed the Purosangue.
