Laveau: We have a hydrogen energy storage device. It can be used at home, it is 3 times the size of the Powerwall.

The Australian company Lavo presented an energy storage in which Li-ion cells were replaced with fuel cells connected to hydrogen tanks. The manufacturer claims that thanks to such a set it was possible to achieve a capacity of 40 kWh. That's three times more than the Powerwall Tesla offers (13,5 kWh). How is it refueled?

Lavo energy storage - an interesting alternative to Li-ion?

Lavo does not expect us to carry the big chunk to the hydrogen refueling station to refill the gas and then put it all back at home. The warehouse will produce its own hydrogen from the solar energy produced by the photovoltaic installation. The gas will be stored in the form of a hydride of an undefined metal in four separate tanks weighing 32 kilograms each.

The total weight of the set consisting of fuel cells, electrolyser and tanks is 324 kilograms.

When there is a need to run a backup energy source, the hydrogen will be released and sent to the fuel cells, where the oxidation process creates energy. The company assumes that the sale of the set will start in November 2020, and the installations will be assembled from June 2021. By 2022, Lavo wants to sell 10 such energy storage (source).

Hydrogen energy storage is roughly three times heavier and three times more capacious than Tesla's Powerwall, i.e. it can store up to 40 kWh of energy in hydrogen. It is also supposed to be three times ... more expensive - the startup valued it at 34 Australian dollars, i.e. the equivalent of PLN 95,2 thousand (source). Lavo claims they can withstand up to 20 operating cycles.
