BMW "M" exist thanks to her. Here is the BMW M1

It is no longer so often that car manufacturers produce racing cars certified for on-road use, just to be able to compete in sports championships. This happened in the 80s with Group B rally cars, but also in the 70s and 90s. IN BMW 1978 460 road samples made M1, including 50 races. The Bavarian house intended to "play" a Porsche in GT races, which took place in good and bad weather.

His racing nature made it a pretty extreme, sexy and decidedly rare road car.

BORN TO RUN

La BMW M1 it is a mid-engined sports car, its heart is a classic BMW, 6 cylinders in a row 3,5 liters longitudinally positioned dry sump with double camshaft and 24 valves. Maximum power 277 CV and 6.500 weights, which in itself is not impressive, but considering the weight 1.200 kg The result is a good power-to-weight ratio.

BMW M1 was and remains a very fast car: drives by 0-100 km / h in 5,6 seconds and reaches me 262 km / h.

Power is sent from the rear wheels through a self-locking differential, and the transmission is a 5-speed manual.

The mechanics were very complex for a car in the late 70s: four disc brakes, independent quad shock absorbers, a very low center of gravity, and a fiberglass body.

SPECIAL BMW

The BMW M1 is the first product of the Motorsport division, or rather the "M", born in the years before the creation of the car. Prototype, "Turbo-concept" 72 ', it was a completely different object: designed by the same TGV designerwith gull wings and a cosmic line, it was truly special. But the logic of the production made it more normal, but no less beautiful. The design was developed by Giugiaro, the swing doors were replaced by more conventional traditional doors, and the taillights were "stolen" from BMW 6 Series. On the other hand, the headlights were retractable to improve aerodynamics at high speeds.

Racing versions BMW M1 they were very successful and were driven by various Formula 1 drivers such as Nelson Piquet, Niki Lauda and Elio De Angelis. The power of the racing cars ranged from 470 CV 950 CV.
