Light tank SK-105 “Cuirassier”

Light tank SK-105 “Cuirassier”In the Austrian army it is classified as a tank destroyer. The Steyr SK-105 tank, also known as the Cuirassier, was designed to provide the Austrian army with its own anti-tank weapon capable of operating in rugged terrain. Work on the tank in 1965 was started by the Saurer-Werke company in 1970, which became part of the Steir-Daimler-Puch association. The armored personnel carrier "Saurer" was adopted as the basis for the design of the chassis. The first sample of the tank was assembled in 1967, five pre-production samples - in 1971. By the beginning of 1993, about 600 vehicles were produced for the Austrian army and for export, they were sold to Argentina, Bolivia, Morocco and Tunisia. The tank has a traditional layout - the control compartment is located in front of the combat in the middle of the engine-transmission rear. The driver's workplace is shifted to the port side. To the right of it are batteries and a non-mechanized ammunition rack.

Three prism observation devices are installed in front of the driver's hatch, the central one of which, if necessary, is replaced by a passive periscope night vision device. The layout feature is the use of a oscillating tower. The turret of the SK-105 tank was created on the basis of the French FL12 turret by making numerous improvements. The commander is placed on the left and the gunner on the right. Since the tower is oscillating, all sights and observation devices are constantly connected to the main and auxiliary weapons. The crew of the tank is 3 people. In connection with the use of automatic loading of the gun, there is no loader. The aft position of the MTO determines the layout of the undercarriage - driving wheels at the rear, guide wheels with track tensioning mechanisms - in front. The main armament of the SK-105 is a rifled 105-mm gun of the 105 G1 brand (previously used the designation CN-105-57) capable of firing various types of ammunition.

The main projectile for combating tanks at ranges up to 2700 m has long been considered a cumulative (HEAT) with a mass of 173 kg and an initial speed of 800 m / s. also high-explosive fragmentation (weight 360 kg initial velocity 150 m/s) and smoke (weight 65 kg initial velocity 18,5 m/s) shells. Later, the French firm "Giat" developed an armor-piercing feathered sub-caliber projectile (APFSDS) designated OFL 700 G19,1 and having greater armor penetration than the mentioned cumulative armor penetration. With a total mass of 695 105 kg (the mass of the core is 1 kg) and an initial velocity of 3 m / s, the projectile is capable of penetrating a standard three-layer NATO target at a distance of 14 m, and a NATO monolithic heavy target at a distance of 1,84 m. The gun is loaded automatically from 1460 drum-type stores for 1000 shots each. The cartridge case is ejected from the tank through a special hatch in the rear of the turret. The gun's rate of fire reaches 1200 rounds per minute. The magazines are reloaded manually outside the tank. Full gun ammunition 2 shots. To the right of the cannon, a 6 12-mm coaxial machine gun MG 41 (Steyr) with an ammunition load of 7 rounds is installed; the same machine gun can be mounted in the commander's cupola. For monitoring battlefield for orientation and aimed shooting, the commander has 7 prism devices and a periscope sight with variable magnification - 16 times and 7 5 times, respectively, the field of view is 28 ° and 9 °.

The sight is closed with a protective swivel cover. The gunner uses two prism devices and a telescopic sight with 8x magnification and a field of view of 85 °. The sight also has a raised and rotated protective cover. At night, the commander uses an infrared night sight with 6x magnification and a 7-degree field of view. Mounted on the roof of the turret are a TCV29 laser range finder with a range of 400 to 10000 m and a 950-watt XSW-30-U IR/white light spotlight. Guidance drives are duplicated - both the gunner and the commander can fire using hydraulic or manual drives. There is no armament stabilizer on the tank. Gun elevation angles +12°, descent -8°. In the “stowed” position, the gun is fixed by a steady rest placed on the upper frontal hull plate. The armor protection of the tank is bulletproof, but some of its sections, primarily the frontal parts of the hull and turret, can withstand the shells of 20-mm automatic guns. The hull is welded from steel armor plates, the tower is steel, welded cast. The thicknesses of the armored parts are: hull forehead 20 mm, turret forehead 40 mm, hull sides 14 mm, turret sides 20 mm, hull and turret roof 8-10 mm. By installing an additional reservation, the frontal projection in the 20-degree sector can be protected from 35-mm cannon sub-caliber projectiles (APDS). Three smoke grenade launchers are installed on each side of the tower.

The standard equipment of the tank is considered to be individual means of protecting the crew (protective masks) from the damaging factors of WMD. The tank has high rates of mobility over rough terrain. It is able to overcome slopes up to 35°, a vertical wall 0,8 m high, trenches up to 2,4 m wide, and move along steep slopes. The tank uses a 6-cylinder diesel engine "Stair" 7FA liquid-cooled turbocharged, developing a power of 235 kW (320 hp) at a crankshaft speed of 2300 rpm. Initially, a transmission was installed, consisting of a 6-speed manual gearbox, a differential-type turning mechanism with a hydrostatic transmission in the drive, and single-stage final drives.

Stopping disc brakes, dry friction. The engine-transmission compartment is equipped with a PPO system, which is automatically or manually actuated. During the modernization, an automatic transmission ZF 6 HP 600 with a torque converter and a lock-up clutch was installed. The undercarriage contains 5 dual-slope rubberized road wheels on each side and 3 support rollers. Individual torsion bar suspension, hydraulic shock absorbers are used on the first and fifth suspension nodes. Tracks with rubber-metal hinges, each containing 78 tracks. For driving on snow and ice, steel spurs can be installed.

Modifications of the light tank SK-105 “Cuirassier”

  • SK-105 - the first serial modification;
  • SK-105A1 - in connection with the introduction of a new armor-piercing sub-caliber projectile with a detachable pallet into the gun ammunition, the design of the revolver magazines and the turret niche was changed. The fire control system has been improved, which includes a digital ballistic computer. The mechanical gearbox was replaced by a hydromechanical ZF 6 HP600;
  • SK-105A2 - as a result of the modernization, a gun stabilization system was installed, the fire control system was updated, the gun loader was improved, the gun ammunition load was increased to 38 rounds. The tank has a more powerful 9FA engine;
  • SK-105A3 - the tank uses a 105-mm American gun M68 (similar to the English L7), stabilized in two guidance planes. This became possible after installing a highly effective muzzle brake on the gun and making changes to the turret design. The armor protection of the front part of the turret has been significantly strengthened. French option available sight with a stabilized field of view SFIM, a new fire control system and a more powerful engine;
  • Greif 4K-7FA SB 20 - ARV on the SK-105 chassis;
  • 4KH 7FA is an engineering tank based on the SK-105 chassis.
  • 4KH 7FA-FA is a driver training machine.
