Best Cars for Dogs

When you have a dog (or more than one), the right car can make traveling more comfortable for both you and your spoiled pet. What is a good car for dogs? Well, a boot big enough for them to jump in, turn around and lie down or sit down is a must. Being able to slide them in and out easily from the back is also a big factor, and the smooth ride helps keep your people and your pets happy on long trips. Here are our top 10 used dog (and owner) vehicles to suit every budget and breed.

Dacia Duster

Dacia Duster is a car that has everything you need to keep dogs and their owners happy. Firstly, it is a large, well-shaped trunk that is easy to clean and has enough space even for large dogs.

As a serious SUV, the Duster also has high ground clearance, so it can take you to some of the more exciting places to drive than a regular hatchback. Then there is the price. The Duster is one of the most economical SUVs you can buy, giving you all the features of an SUV for the price of a small hatchback and with very low running costs.

Honda jazz

If you want to keep your canine friends close at hand, then the Honda Jazz is perfect for you. That's because the Jazz has a "Magic Seat" system that allows you to fold down the rear seat bases like in a movie theater to create a flat, spacious space for your dog just behind the front seats. You can also fold down the rear seats to make the trunk even bigger if 354 liters isn't enough for you, giving the Jazz the room and practicality of a much larger car.

Like any Honda, the Jazz is likely to be a reliable companion, so your dog's trip to the beach is unlikely to be interrupted by an unexpected breakdown.

Nissan Qashqai

Owning a dog, especially a large breed, makes the practicality and large trunk of an SUV very attractive. But what if you can only count on the running costs of a family hatchback? Then pay attention to the Nissan Qashqai. It is the most popular midsize SUV in the UK and its excellent fit, high quality interior and high level of equipment make it a highly recommended choice.

The 430-litre boot should be big enough for most dogs, and the wide opening means they'll be easy to jump in and out of. And because it's so popular, there are always dozens of cars on the Cazoo website, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding the right Qashqai for you.

Vauxhall Crossland X

The Vauxhall Crossland X is one of the most affordable and dog-friendly small SUVs you can buy. Trunk volume is 410 liters, and in models with an optional sliding rear seat, this can be increased to 520 liters. Your dog will appreciate the extra space. Up front, headroom and legroom are also excellent, but the Crossland X is compact on the outside and very easy to park.

An optional pet package can be purchased from Vauxhall. It includes a dog guard to keep your pet safer and a cargo liner that protects the trunk from paw prints and scratches. The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine is popular for its combination of performance and fuel economy.

Renault Captur

The Renault Captur is based on the Clio supermini, but clever packaging means it has more room for your dog. The trunk is huge for a car of this size, and the rear seats slide back and forth to give your dog even more room to stretch out.

All models are economical, and some diesel versions have an official average of nearly 80 mpg. You will help yourself and your pets to be safer with the Renault Captur, because the model has received five stars in the Euro NCAP safety assessment program.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate

If your dog insists on traveling in luxury, you should consider the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate. In many ways it's the perfect vehicle for dogs, and its 640 liters of luggage space means even a Great Dane will find plenty of room. Meanwhile, the very low loading lip and wide boot opening make it easy for dogs to jump in and out of it. All models have a power tailgate for added convenience. Don't worry, it has an auto-stop feature that won't let it close if your dog decides to put his paw in the way!

The AMG Line finish is very popular. It adds some sporty flair on the outside, as well as some technical and cosmetic upgrades on the inside. You can choose from a range of engines, but the E220d strikes the best balance of high performance and excellent fuel efficiency.

Volvo V90

The Volvo V90 feels so complex that you can ask your dog to dry his feet before he jumps into the 560-litre trunk. Plush carpets come with a host of practical features, including handy hanging hooks, storage nets and a power trunk lid. A useful additional option is a dog door with a luggage compartment divider, which means your dog cannot jump out when you open the trunk.

There's a choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options, and all versions are well-equipped, with leather trim and heated seats standard on all models, plus you get Volvo's attractive and intuitive touchscreen infotainment system.

Land Rover Discovery

Few vehicles are better than the Land Rover Discovery for transporting a pair of golden retrievers for a walk in the country park. And few cars do it with such a typical British sense of style.

Dog-friendly options include a premium quilted luggage compartment mat to protect floors and seatbacks, a foldable pet access ramp, a portable shower and a foldable pet carrier. What comes as standard is a massive trunk. In the seven-seat variant, you will have 228 liters of luggage space, which is about the same as in a small hatchback. This increases to 698 liters in six-seat mode, which is more than enough for those golden retrievers we mentioned.

Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento offers great value considering its size, so it's a big SUV that's dog-friendly and you can buy one for the money. It will also fit seven people and you can fold each of the third row seats up or down depending on the number of people and dogs on each trip.

Despite its size, the Sorento is easy to drive and park, and its high seating position provides excellent visibility of the road ahead. All models come standard with a rearview camera and rear parking sensors.

BMW X1

The BMW X1 is BMW's smallest SUV, but it's more than capable of carrying dogs. With 505 liters of boot space and room for three adults in the back, you can carry both kids and pets in comfort. It also comes standard with a power trunk lid that can be opened with a flick of the foot under the rear bumper. Useful when inputting and outputting impatient dogs.

This is a smart car. On the outside, it's no bigger than a small family hatchback like the Ford Focus, but the proportions and interior space make it feel like a bigger, more expensive SUV.
