Why professional drivers pour soda into antifreeze

In terms of its popularity in everyday use, soda is second only to the famous WD-40: it is cleaned, polished, plaque removed and several hundred more operations are performed. It was also used in the cooling system of a car. Read more on the AutoVzglyad portal.

Under each sink - from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok - there is always a red box, which, no one knows when and why it appeared, never ends, and at first, still completely inexperienced, is actually not needed. However, over the years, every Russian begins to find more and more new horizons for this amazingly versatile use of household chemicals and no longer grins at the offer to buy a couple of boxes “to have it”. It's, you guessed it, soda. Polish a scratch? Please! Remove odor and stain? Welcome! Clean the battery from sediment? Soda too! It is impossible to cover the entire geography of the application of this powder, because every day there are more and more new tasks. This happened with the cooling system of automobile engines, or rather, with the coolant.

In fact, a modern coolant changes every 150 km, because it is hygroscopic, that is, it does not absorb water, and once you pay for high-quality antifreeze in a trusted store, you can not think about replacing for at least five years. This is in ideal conditions. In three cases out of four, the coolant has to be replaced or topped up when the car boils or a leak forms in the system. There is no time for a trip to your favorite “auto parts”: we take what they give and pay as much as they demand. And in roadside stalls on the highway, remote villages and other places where “according to the law of meanness” a puddle of antifreeze will grow under the car, in Russia they sell anything, but not high-quality coolant.

“Additive packages”, “ultra-modern basis” and other important and necessary, but for the most part marketing turnovers in this case do not play a decisive role. The main thing is to get home so that the engine does not boil. You can check the “slurry” bought in a roadside shop only by a canister - and they now look even better with crooks than with manufacturers - and by the color of the antifreeze itself. Is it evenly colored? So you can take. And what will happen to her, antifreeze is like antifreeze, what's the difference!

But the difference, nevertheless, is: a high-quality "cooler" is made on an alcohol basis, but a "bodyagu" is made on an acid basis. It is difficult to understand when it freezes or boils, but it can be said with great certainty that the hoses and channels in the engine head will not be healthy from such a composition. With a good outcome, only disassembly and cleaning will be required, with a bad outcome, the replacement of everything, including the radiator. Soda will help to avoid all the nightmare described above.

The fact is that by adding a little soda to alcohol-based antifreeze, we will not see anything at all. But if the liquid is made on the basis of acids, there will be a reaction and quite violent. In fact, this is a laboratory study of a freshly purchased product, albeit made in field conditions. By pouring ten grams of the newly purchased coolant into the cap of the same canister and adding just a spoonful of soda, you can accurately assess the quality of the antifreeze and make the only right decision. Pour it into the engine of your car, or is it better to add spring water and drive to the nearest major city with chain stores?
