Best Used Sedan Cars

Sedans (where the trunk is separated from the main passenger compartment) may not be as trendy as they once were, but they are still hugely popular and offer something to suit most needs. Whether you go for a compact, economical model or something sportier or even more luxurious, a sedan can offer all the space you need, as well as a more enjoyable driving experience and more elegant styling than many other vehicle types.

But with such a wide selection, which one to choose? Here is our selection of the best.

1. Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Mercedes C-Class offers you all the elegance, quality and comfort you expect from a brand in a compact yet practical sedan that can be very economical.

The interior is a big attraction. It looks and feels smarter than many of the competition's interiors, with plenty of high-tech features and a sense of true craftsmanship throughout. The C-Class is beautifully designed on the outside as well, with sleek lines echoing the shapes of larger, more expensive Mercedes-Benz sedans.

There is a good selection of petrol and diesel engines, all of which are surprisingly efficient. You can also choose plug-in hybrid versions that can go up to 34 miles on electric power alone, depending on the model.

2. BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series has a reputation for being one of the most enjoyable cars to drive. The latest version (released in 2019) more than lives up to it with its exceptional balance and the sense of connection it gives you while driving.

You also get the feeling of quality that is synonymous with the 3 Series, plus the very latest technology. This includes a beautifully designed and easy-to-use infotainment system, as well as "active" safety features to help you avoid a collision. The interior is as comfortable as it is attractive. It has plenty of room for four adults and has more trunk space than the Nissan Qashqai.

Each engine gives you enough power to easily overtake or hit the motorway, but if you prefer something a little faster, you can choose from a wide range of high-performance versions. If low running costs are a priority, you have a plug-in hybrid option that can make short trips on electric power alone.

3. Audi A3 sedan

Most people think of the Audi A3 as a classic family hatchback, but it's also available as a great sedan. Because it has the same interior - one of the car's best attributes - as the hatchback, it feels like a true premium product.

The A3's compact dimensions make it the perfect choice if you want all the essential benefits of a luxury sedan in something smaller and more fuel efficient. Compared to the larger Audi A4 sedan, the A3 is equally stylish inside and out, with nearly the same choice of engines and features, but with lower purchase and operating costs. The A3 also handles well with a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines and all-wheel drive capability.

Although the all-new A3 sedan was released in 2020, we have chosen the previous model, which is more profitable to buy used.

You may not think of Mazda as a premium car manufacturer like BMW or Audi, but given the strength of the Mazda 6, it probably deserves to be in this category.

This slender sedan is not only beautiful on the outside. Inside, it has expensive materials and elaborate details that make it feel much more upscale than you might expect. Drive 6 and you will find that it has not only style but also essence. It's good fun, at times it feels almost like a sports car, but still fulfills the role of a comfortable family car.

While not as cheap as some of the competition, the 6 is better equipped than most other models. Even the most affordable versions have plenty of standard features, including satellite navigation, front and rear parking sensors, and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Volvo S60 Sedan is an attractive alternative to premium competitors such as the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series.

Firstly, it is a beautiful car with a distinctive and pleasantly restrained exterior and interior. The minimalist interior design is especially quirky, paired with extremely comfortable seats and a large, easy-to-use touchscreen to make even the longest journeys stress-free.

The S60 is also one of the safest sedans, with cutting-edge technology designed to help you prevent a crash in the first place or mitigate damage if a collision is unavoidable. In addition to powerful petrol and diesel engines, you have the option of powerful plug-in hybrid versions that provide excellent fuel economy and the ability to drive up to 30 emission-free miles on electric power alone.

9. Jaguar XF

As a beautiful luxury sedan with a touch of sportiness, the Jaguar XF is what Jaguar does best. And while it's stylish on the outside, its interior lives up to it with attractive and luxurious finishes and materials. There is enough head and leg room for four adults, and the trunk is huge.

But what makes the XF stand out is how well it rides. It combines the sporty feel that makes twisty roads fun with the ability to smooth out bumps - no other big sedan does that so well. The choice of engines is not as wide as competing models from Audi or BMW, but there is still variety, including some very efficient diesels and some very powerful petrol engines. Every XF comes with a host of features, including power front seats, leather upholstery and front and rear parking sensors.
