The best used cars of the middle class - reviews, comparison

Middle-class cars, along with city and small cars, are the most popular group of cars on the Polish secondary market. We advise what to choose.

When choosing a car, the driver usually starts by calculating the running costs of the car. In the case of young cars, smaller cars are often the best option, as they are cheaper to repair in the event of a breakdown. But in the group of older cars, these proportions are blurred. The availability of replacement parts for original parts and low fuel consumption are increasingly tipping the balance in favor of mid-range cars.

Let's take a closer look at the 1,4 generation Honda Civic and Accord. In the secondary market, buying a well-maintained Civic 2000 9 year of release will cost 11-1,8 thousand zlotys. zloty. Accord 2 the same age will be 4-7 thousand. PLN is more expensive. Combined fuel consumption of Civic will be 9-2 liters. Accord will consume about 90 liters of fuel more. Instead of 136, it offers as much as XNUMX hp. power, a larger trunk and a much more spacious, comfortable interior.

– Prices for spare parts are comparable. For example, brake pads for an Accord cost around PLN 100-130. You can buy them for Civic for about PLN 70, but they can also cost PLN 130-150. The same is true for discs, the prices of which differ slightly, explains Stanisław Plonka, an auto mechanic from Rzeszów.

Due to the engine size of less than two liters, the same applies to OSAGO, and a slight difference in the cost of cars only slightly increases the AC premium for the Accord. 

More comfort and safety

According to Marek Rak, head of the car exchange in Rzeszow, drivers are increasingly switching to larger and more comfortable cars.

– Yes, urban models with small engines are still the most popular, but compacts and the middle class are becoming bolder in our market. Moreover, by mounting a gas installation even on a large engine, we will practically equal the operating costs with a small car. And in the case of the middle class, safety and driving comfort are much higher, Cancer argues.

That is why, together with our interlocutors, we scanned the aftermarket in search of the best mid-range cars.

Used cars of the middle class up to PLN 15

Contrary to appearances, the choice here is quite large. In our opinion, the most interesting proposal is the Honda Accord mentioned in the text, but apart from it we found a few more proposals.

Honda Accord VI generation.

This is a car produced between 1998 and 2002. Available with 1,6L, 1,8L, 2,0L, 2,2L and 2,3L petrol engines and Rover XNUMXL turbodiesel. Due to the average performance and failure rate, we do not recommend buying empyema.

Among gasoline engines, the most popular V-TEC power units - 1,8 and 2,0 deserve special attention. The first has 136 hp, the second has 147 hp. Both are virtually trouble free and provide good performance. The combined fuel consumption is in the range of 8-10 liters per hundred. The 2,3 engine consumes a little fuel.

For thrill-seekers, we recommend the Type-R version, equipped with a 212 hp engine. 2,2 liters. However, when buying one of the basic versions for 15 thousand PLN is not a problem, for a real, well-maintained Type-R, you often have to cook more than 20. zloty.

Disadvantages? The Honda Accord has problems with corrosion, which most often affects the area of ​​the sills and rear fenders.

Toyota Avensis I generation.

This is a response to the Agreement. A car produced between 1997 and 2002 is very popular in our market. A choice of 1,6, 1,8 and 2,0 petrol engines, as well as a 2,0 D4D diesel. Compared to the Accord, which served only as a sedan and liftback, the Avensis is also a roomy station wagon.

In the case of Toyota, you should not be afraid of a diesel engine, because this is a good Japanese-made unit. Among gasoline engines, the most reasonable choice is 1,8 or 2,0. 1,6 engine is weak. Since 2001, Toyota has produced a spacious seven-seater version of the Avensis Verso, available with 2,0 and 2,4 petrol engines, as well as a two-liter D4D turbodiesel.

Prices for Avensis in the secondary market start at about 9-10 thousand. zloty. For a copy from the end of production, you will have to pay about 14-17 thousand zlotys. zloty.

Volkswagen Passat B5

Some drivers are wary of this car because of the stories about the extremely high cost of repairing the front multi-link suspension. However, in car shops, repair kits can be bought for as little as PLN 700, and prices for branded replacement kits start at about PLN 1500.

The range of Passat B5 engines in the pre-facelift version (1996-2001) includes petrol units with a capacity of 1,6, 1,8, 2,3 and 2,8 liters, as well as turbodiesels: tireless 1,9 and 2,5 liters V6. At a later stage of production, it was enriched, among other things, with o two-liter petrol and diesel units, as well as unit injectors, began to be used in 1,9 TDI engines.

On stock exchanges and in commission shops, a car with a gasoline engine can be found in the region of 9-10 thousand. zloty. But when looking for a well-maintained and serviced car, you need to have about 13-15 thousand. zloty. Unfortunately, Trade Winds tend to be high mileage vehicles, so it's worth taking a thorough x-ray of the car before buying.

Ford Mondeo MKIII

Year of release 2000-2006. Gasoline engines are represented by several versions 1,8 (110-130 hp), 145 hp. 2,0 and a three-liter V6 in versions of 204 and 226 hp. Two-liter diesels are 2,0 TDDi with 90 or 115 hp, and later 2,0 TDCi with 115 to 130 hp. The 2,2 TDCi unit, which develops 155 hp, is much less common, but also present. Mondeo is praised primarily for its comfortable suspension and good driving performance.

Drivers, on the other hand, have been complaining about widespread corrosion and TDCi engines since the start of production. However, problems can be dealt with. A car regularly serviced at an official service station has a 10-year warranty against body perforation, so all repairs are removed at the expense of the seller. The recipe for extending the life of the delicate injection system of TDCi engines is to fill with high quality fuel.

Mondeo's biggest advantage is its price. At the beginning of production, you can buy a car for about PLN 9-10 thousand. zlotys, and a well-equipped, serviced copy of 2002-2003 can be found even for 12-13 thousand. zloty.

Group up to PLN 30

For this amount you can buy a good and relatively young car. In addition to the cars that we offer below, you can also consider the younger Ford Mondeo Mk I and Volkswagen Passat, which were facelifted in the B5 version in 2001.

Audi A6 C5

A brand known for the very meticulous handling of cars. Audi A6 in C5 version was produced in 1997-2004 and is the best example of this. Thanks to high-quality materials, even the interior of a car with high mileage looks very good. The most popular engines available are 1,9 and 2,5 TDI turbodiesels, as well as gasoline engines - a 1,8 turbo with 150 hp. or atmospheric 2,0.

Diesel 2,5 TDI is considered emergency and expensive to maintain, so most drivers choose 1,9 TDI. A particularly interesting offer is the 130 hp version. from the end of production. Cars equipped with this engine usually have a six-speed manual transmission.

Volvo S80

This is a spacious and comfortable car. Basically very well equipped. Volvo is also renowned for quality materials that wear out slowly. The engine range is primarily a 2,4 petrol unit in 140 and 170 hp versions. The most popular diesel engines are 130 hp. 2,4 and 140 HP 2,5. The car is perfectly protected from corrosion. Prices for the S80 start at about 18-20 thousand. zloty. 30 thousand PLN is enough for a good car from 2003-2004.

Mazda 6

Successor to model 626. Produced in 2002-2007. After Toyota Avensis and Honda Accord, this is one of the strongest players straight from the Japanese market. Although Mazda is less popular in Poland than Honda or Toyota, the "six" is a very interesting proposition.

The car is available with five petrol engines ranging from 1,8 to 3,0 liters. Diesels are represented by three options for a two-liter engine with a capacity of 121, 136 and 143 hp. On the exchanges, you can most often find 1,8- and 2,0-liter gasoline and two-liter diesel engines. All three are very strong. The strength of the Mazda 6 lies in its dynamic silhouette and timeless design. The hard plastic inside can be irritating. Prices for first generation cars range from PLN 15 to 25. zloty.

Opel Vectra C 

This is a solid German car. Like the Ford Mondeo, the Vectra is rapidly losing value, so you can buy a young car for decent money. 22-25 thousand PLN is enough for a car from 2005-2006. The range of third-generation Vectra engines is extensive, but in the aftermarket in Poland, the most common are 1,8, 2,0 and 2,2 petrol engines, as well as 1,9, 2,0 and 2,2 diesel engines. An interesting alternative to the Vectra is the even more comfortable Signum, built on the floor of the Vectra station wagon.

This amount will allow you to choose a young car with low mileage and serviced at an authorized service station. What is important, the choice of models will also be considerable.  

BMW 5 Series

The generation marked with the E60 symbol was produced in 2003-2010. The car is famous for its excellent workmanship, spacious and elegant interior and a wide range of powertrains. BMW equipped the “five” with as many as 14 gasoline engines with power from 169 to 507 hp. and 9 diesel engines to choose from with power from 163 to 286 hp.

On the Polish market, diesel versions 530 and 535 are mainly popular. Both work very well, but they also have some drawbacks. This is primarily a cracked exhaust manifold, a failed crankshaft pulley and emergency tire pressure sensors or a parking sensors system. Prices for "Friday" start at about 35 thousand. Volkswagen Passat B6

The car from 2005-2010 has replaced the 15th generation, which we recommend in the group of cars costing approx. zloty. The sixth generation of the Passat is the abandonment of the multi-link suspension and new engines, led by a 140-horsepower 2,0 TDI and a 150-horsepower 2,0 FSI. Later years of production also included turbocharged TSI petrol engines.

Despite the higher power, the 2,0 TDI engine does not collect the best reviews. Its users complain about problems with the head and injection system. That is why models with a 105-horsepower 1,9 TDI engine are the most popular with drivers. The dynamic 2,0 FSI engine is also praised. The disadvantage of the VW Passat B6 is the appearance of corrosion on the tailgate and around the moldings on the doors. Prices for cars with gasoline engines start at about 30 thousand. Toyota Avensis III generation.

A car marked with the T27 symbol has been on sale since 2009. This is one of the most popular middle class cars on the Polish market. Toyota Avensis is equipped with three petrol engines of 1,6, 1,8 and 2,0 liters and four versions of diesel engines 2,0 D4D and 2,2 D-CAT. Gasoline engines develop 132, 147 and 152 hp. Diesels offer from 126 to 180 hp.

The car gets very good failure rate ratings and is very fuel efficient. For example, in the most powerful, two-liter petrol version, it consumes less than 10 liters of fuel in the urban cycle. The most powerful, 180-horsepower diesel engine, it takes only 100 liters of diesel fuel to travel 7 km around the city. Car prices start at $50. Mercedes E-Class

The W211 series are cars from 2002-2009. Unlike the not-so-successful W210, this generation is devoid of corrosion, which was a problem with its predecessor. W211 has fifteen engine versions - 8 petrol and 7 diesel. The 200 and 220 CDI versions are the most popular on the Polish market, while the 270 CDI version is in the highest demand. The most popular petrol engines are E200 Kompressor and V6 units - E240, E280, E320 and E350. As is the case with the BMW 5 Series and the Volkswagen Passat, most Mercedes E-class cars are imported from Western Europe, with considerable mileage. Therefore, it is worth paying extra for a verified copy with a documented history. Prices start at about 33 thousand. zloty.

Honda Accord VIII generation.
