The Hyundai i10 may not be the most attractive of city cars, but its talents run deep. The current generation i10 has been on sale new since 2020, when it replaced the model that was sold from 2014 to 2020.

Not only does the i10 look pretty smart, it's very comfortable to use, well-equipped in most models, and feels like it's built to last. It's also good to drive, with responsive steering and a comfortable ride. Long trips won't be a problem either, as it feels safe and stable at motorway speeds.

But the i10's best feature is its spaciousness. There's plenty of headroom and legroom in the front, adults will fit in the back, and while a dining table and chairs won't exactly fit in the trunk, there's more than enough room for a week's worth of shopping.

2. Kia Pikanto

The Kia Picanto is one of the sportiest city cars out there, and the driving experience matches the looks with sharp steering that changes direction quickly and confidently. Driving can be a lot of fun, but that doesn't detract from the comfort of driving on roads littered with potholes and speed bumps.

Inside you'll find room for four adults and in the trunk room for weekend luggage. You also have a generous helping of standard equipment on most models, and this car is easy to get to know because the controls, buttons, and knobs are easy to find and use.

3. Volkswagen Ap

The Volkswagen Up is one of the most prestigious city cars thanks to its quality interior and premium VW image.

It feels light and nimble in town, yet durable and comfortable enough to relax on long motorway trips. It's also a great option if you really enjoy driving with responsive steering and motors. The sporty GTI, in particular, is a small pocket rocket that is a joy to drive.

Practicality is another strength of the Up. There is room for four people, and the trunk can fit a few carry-on suitcases. Five-door models are the more practical choice because your passengers will have easier access to the rear seats.   

4. Fiat 500

The Fiat 500's chic looks have made it a style icon, and its retro interior, inspired by classic 1950s Italian cars, creates a real feel-good factor. This is especially true of the special edition models with their finishes and color combinations - some of them create a bright and cheerful atmosphere, like the Vintage '57 edition, while others, like the Riva model, seem quite luxurious.

Small rear seats and a rather tiny trunk mean the 500 isn't the most practical of city cars, but it's light and easy to drive, and the comparatively large windows offer great views. If you have mobility issues, this might be a good choice because the seats are set quite high and the doors open wide. This means getting in and out of it is easier than in lower cars.

5 Toyota Aygo

The Toyota Aygo is a young driver's favorite, partly because of its bold styling, but mostly because it's very affordable. Aygo's insurance group ratings really help cut costs, as even the top model is only in the 7 out of 50 group - you can save a lot of money by buying an Aygo instead of a car in a higher insurance group. The Aygo is also very efficient, capable of delivering an average fuel economy of up to 61 mpg. Vehicle excise (vehicle tax) is waived on models sold new before September 2017, and maintenance and repairs are inexpensive because they are easy to work with. Aygo likes it on other levels too. It's light, easy to park, reasonably spacious and practical, and most models are well-equipped with useful technology.

6. Renault Zoe

The Renault Zoe has the longest range of any small electric vehicle. According to official figures, the latest models can go up to 245 miles on a fully charged battery, so it's entirely possible to make longer cross-country trips.

If you do, Zoe's interior is a great place to spend that time. It has plenty of space, is well-equipped with technology to keep you entertained, and you and your passengers get a good view thanks to the high seats. The Zoe also has the largest trunk of any car listed here, with room for a week of holiday luggage.

7. Honda E

Few cars are more comfortable for city driving than the electric Honda E. With light streaming in through large windows, sofa-like seats, and a wood-look dashboard that looks like high-end furniture, the E feels more like a living room than a car. . . It is also a very high-tech living room that matches the futuristic style. There are five screens on the dashboard, one for the driver and passenger, one in the middle and one at each end, which display images from the side rear-view cameras that the E has installed in place of the exterior rear-view mirrors to improve aerodynamic efficiency. .

The E has enough interior and trunk space to take your kids to school or your friends to the shops. It's also quiet and smooth to drive. It can go about 130 miles on a fully charged battery, so long trips out of town can be challenging. It's also the most expensive car on this list, but its design and technology makes it highly desirable.

8. Fiat Panda

The Fiat Panda is unique among city cars because an all-wheel drive version is available along with the conventional all-wheel drive models. This, along with the increased ground clearance, means the Panda 4x4 is very capable off the beaten track, so it could be ideal if your hometown is prone to winter snow.

Whichever version of Panda you choose, it's a lot of fun to live with. The cute exterior is paired with an interior full of bold shapes, bright colors and chunky buttons. There is room for four adults and a relatively large trunk; fold down the rear seats and it can turn into a small van. It's also very easy to drive because the steering is light and responsive, the shift lever is close to the steering wheel and the huge windows offer great views.
